Yep, it is 21st October here in UK and we celebrate the Immortal Memory.

Nelson is rolling in his grave, as the Russian Navy trails its coat tails in the Dover Straits (what timing?)

Escorted by a couple of tiny UK ships. They have a carrier that flies fast movers, MIG 29s with folding wing tips. They have a battle cruiser. We have….two little ships "to escort them".

Last time this happened we sent out Swordfish. They might have been massacred, but at least they had the potential to fly off a flight deck. Eugene Esmonde VC, come back with your squadron, we need you tonight. At least the Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen were going in the opposite direction and running for home and were more damaged than most history allows (if only by mines)

Deadhead you are seeing this as a humiliation. The news bulletin I heard made it sound like a victory. It was a glorious day for the Royal Navy. The whole Russian fleet was chased out of the Channel by Boaty McBoatface.

Brilliant. This was the Channel dash in the opposite direction then! Let's see if there is a minefield at the far end as in 42 (God Forbid actually)

But just remember what happened to the last Russian fleet that transited the Channel (in 1905)!

Oh true. But at least they got here. Bets seem on, on the carrier not making it to the Mediterranean, I gather. I would be less sure. I guess we will next see them transit the Bosphorus for a friendly base on the Black Sea.

But we are well of Napoleonics and I do apologise for that.

All I really wanted was to remind folk about 21st October. Like St George's Day………. Few remember it. How different for us Paddies and March 17th (also our twin sons' birthday of course)

Russian Navy ships use an international sea lane…

And?

Sorry you missed the memo that the RN's glory days are long over: TMP link

To be honest the press coverage and expert commentary I've seen, while concerned about Putin's aggressive posturing, sees the Russian flotilla as a bit of a joke.
