Very nice figures and a great paint job! I am not familiar with the set and I have a question: Does the set only provide figures for this last stand vignette or does it allow one to build a more "neutral" (not wounded) firing line if one is not playing Maiwand.

Nick,

The Perry plastic British infantry box allows you to build whatever unit w/puttees, valise equipment & Martini-Henrys you want, but does include a "Bobby" figure and the colours for the 66th. Also, the special figure of the wounded Lt. Olivey with bandaged head is metal and only available as a free bonus if you order 3 boxes of the plastic infantry, at least last I heard.

Thanks for the clarification, Mad Guru. So, are you going to order some? I know you already have at least two generations of the 66th. Jeez, new versions are getting as common as iPhones!

Mad Guru23 Oct 2016 10:22 p.m. PST

Nick,

Yes, I do plan to order the "package deal" of 3 boxes that comes with that free Lt. Olivey figure -- even though as you well know I already have my own version of Olivey carrying the Queen's Colour, which I converted myself! But somehow it just wouldn't feel right for me not to have a commercially available Maiwand-specific figure!

Yeah, the Artizan Second Afghan War British Infantry also include a pack of bareheaded, bandaged, and generally "worse for wear" types, well-suited to a "Last stand of the 66th at Maiwand" vignette. I already have Artizan highlanders to paint up as the 92nd (with historically accurate uniforms, equipment & weapons), and Punjabis to paint as 5th Punjab Infantry PFF… but if given the choice between the somewhat oversize Artizan and the slimmer Perry version of the same troop type, I will go with the Perry version, such as for the 66th Berkshires. As you may recall, my current version of the 66th uses Perry Sudan Brits, who wear loose trouser legs instead of puttees, so as the, "Mad Guru of Maiwand," I do need to replace them sooner or later!

I thought the 66th wore brown puttees, with only the officers in blue?

good job on the painting though.

@Bindon Blood: yes, I thought so too. It seems there's a slight discrepency between the "older" painting guidelines for the 66th contained in the Osprey "British Army on Campaign (3) 1856-1881" by Michael Michael Barthop, illustrated by Pierre Turner, and the newer guidelines provided by the Perrys, I believe as per Colonel Mike Snook, who did do a lot of research on Maiwand for the chapter on the battle in his excellent book, "Into the Jaws of Death."

I believe the only difference in the guidelines is that the earlier source says only the officers had blue puttees, while the enlisted men's were a brownish shade of khaki, while the newer source says the entire regt. wore blue puttees.

The EM of my own 66th all have dark khaki puttees, while their officers have blue, and they'll stay that way -- at least until someone presents a primary written or pictorial source that convinces me it's unquestionable historical fact that they all wore blue puttees, but like you I agree, that's a great painting job on those figures!
