I do not know about being smothered in rabbits and being nipped, but the rest of the story is, apparently, quite true. The Emperor never quite forgave Berthier. When he accidently shot Massena's eye out whilst hunting, he made Berthier take the blame.

It seems the rabbits were not attacking Napoleon and the other men present. They were tame rabbits who mistook them as their keepers and ran to them to get fed. It sounds really comical and must have looked really funny to anyone watching the scene, but I don't think many of us would hang around if we had thousands of rabbits bearing down on us, do you?
