Oh dear. I had thought this was to be a serious history of Elba and what Boney did (and might have) achieved. It is a topic that needs revisiting, beyond just the accounts of his jailer! This is instead a romantic novel. OK, good news, if even one more person in the Universe learns about any moment in history, as a result (Grin) |

Keneally is a decent writer (for an Australian) and does his research. He won the Booker Prize for Schindler's Ark ( on which Schindler's List was based). The Balcombes had links to Australia and Betsy spent time here. |

I misread the blurb (to be honest I gave up early on). This is about St Helena, as the title suggests, and I possibly dismissed this far too easily, I admit. Esp with this author's track record for non-fiction anyway! I would still love to see a decent history of Elba, as the short time there proved far more interesting |
