Only one I ever flew in was a McDonnell-Douglas DC-9 back in 1996.

What you don't really see is how beefy the fuselage is. Belly skin is over 1/8"(3mm) thick, and the reinforcement sections around the windows are 4" deep.

Boeings are built solid, although the slogan has more to do with the fact that Boeing understands that the pilot can always override the computer when necessary.
