1. I like what I have now. 2. I am always looking for new ideas. 3. Ajax Finsterwald always has good innovative ideas. It's worth a try. 4. I write my own rules. 5. I dislike having to learn a new set, and not getting it right the first few times. Of course, feel free to add your own choices. |

I already know what I like. If something new comes along, I usually take a look after a set has been around for a year or two. Why be hasty, after all Mike |

Only if my interpretation is that the 'new' set contains innovative concepts and or rules that will interest me; this can also be based on reviews here. I've been gaming since the mid-70's so I am fairy cynical of whats 'new'. |

I buy and read a lot of rules, out of professional obligation: Can't write if you have no idea what the state of the art is. Most don't get to the table, but if it's something really clever, like Rogue Planet or The Battlefield, I make a point of it. (okay, I just posted so I could fawn over Brent Spivey) |

Mostly not. I like short and simple, and "latest sexy" usually comes in multiple volumes. Sometimes someone else hosts, and I'm stuck. I'll admit I'm actually looking for small battle medieval/fantasy and skirmish SF, so a couple of the recent Ospreys may get a look and possibly even a trial. But nothing that requires rebasing or rosters, and nothing that comes in multiple volumes--or is so thick it has to be read in multiple sittings. I'm used to the outrageous price, but just once could I pay it for four pages of clear prose? |

I'm not sure "latest sexy" means what you think it does. I did however see a flyer for BDSM Introduction Parties at the family clinic yesterday, so I could safely consider that "latest sexy." I did not grab one as I was there with my son. |

I don't think I've ever rushed out and bought the latest "sexy" rule set just because it was "sexy." I am familiar with quite a few of the rule sets for my eras, and have some ideas about what I perceive to be problems and what I'd like to see instead. So, I'll happily look over reviews and AARs to see if it looks like they will actually meet my requirements. I only buy the ones that I feel are most likely to resolve weaknesses in existing games. Always looking for new ideas. However, I am selective about who I think will deliver something new and interesting. |

I play the Wait-and-See game; what's the reaction of the gaming community? What do reviewers say? What's the skinny on TMP? Then I decide. A good general always makes a reconnaissance before planning his strategy. |

I typically wait and review and sometimes eventually try at a con or if someone else is running a game. Then I end after much indecision, up buying it with plans of playing only to find out it is not new and shiny anymore and people have moved on. Looks nice along with the rest on my bookshelf though. |

I am always interested in other people's ideas and buy and read rules with that in mind. I rarely end up actually playing them though, although sometimes you come across something inspiring. I write my own too. |
Green Tiger | 12 Oct 2016 2:24 a.m. PST |
I do look at new rules sets that come up but not because they are trendy but because I hope that they will offer something that I want- if they do I buy them – they usually don't so I use my own rules for the most part. |
olicana | 12 Oct 2016 3:17 a.m. PST |
Never, when I need a set of rules I ask about, take advice from people I trust and buy the best tried and tested sets around. If they happen to be 'latest' and 'sexy' that is purely by accident. Latex sexy is a whole different kettle of fish……………. James |

I have no sexy rules. Just wargaming rules. |
Yesthatphil | 12 Oct 2016 5:47 a.m. PST |
1, 2, 3 and 4 … But I seldom buy new rules – I am happy to try them, review them, discuss them (and I'll go on and buy them if I expect to be going to play them more often and they aren't too expensive) … OK – there are some authors (say, Neil Thomas, Phil Barker, Arty Conliffe as examples) whose track record is such that they're always worth a look … But generally, the more I am likely to use them the more I am likely to buy them – expensive picture books with rehash game mechanisms tacked in? No, not those Phil |

Tend to have favoured rules for many periods that I am unlikely to change. Fringe periods – I will usually check with colleagues, see if anyone else is mad keen.. and if so – potentially purchase. But frankly, with TooFatLardies, Ganesha, SpecialistMilitaryPublishing and Barker, I have most stuff covered. The only recent exception is Imperial Skies. |
Tgerritsen | 12 Oct 2016 3:54 p.m. PST |
Wait, there are sexy rulesets? How did I miss that? What kind of games are you people playing? There's very little sex in the rules I have and I have 100s of sets. Darn. I guess I'm missing out. |
