Hi

I am looking for a series of maps of the Major battles from the Napoleonic Wars. All the same scale and style any ideas where I can find them on line or in a single book

Oh yes…thank you indeed.

What an incredible resource you have found for us!

Folks, follow this link and try it out! Campaign maps are superb. Battlefields less detailed than we might want, but still……..superb find

I have a large printed version on the West point maps from maybe 25 years ago.

Brechtel19806 Oct 2016 12:41 p.m. PST

Those on the site are a combination of the older, and much better, maps from the Esposito/Elting Atlas and those that were made for cadet instruction after 1968.

It should be noted that not all of the available maps are presented here. The Esposito/Elting Atlas has 169 maps covering 1796-1815.

I would highly recommend getting a copy of the Esposito/Elting Atlas, the latest edition (1999) is recommended and is in large format. There was also an edition in smaller format that is the same thing, just smaller.

For the Peninsular War I would highly recommend the Lipscombe Atlas.

I agree completely with Deadhead that this is an excellent site.

+1 for Brechtel--I have a copy from a guy who graduated West Point in '45. Superb--I've carried it around with me for over 45 years…

Don't forget there is a volume of Supplemental maps too, listed for HI 401-402 Subcourse II. Mine is dated 1972. Has some more maps but again, not all.

Thanks very much.

The first use of Atlas maps for study at West Point was done in 1939 and again in 1942 by the Department Head at the time, T Dodson Stamps. The texts being used then were Jomini's Life of Napoleon in 1939 then replaced by Yorck von Wartenberg's Napoleon as a General.

The Esposito/Elting Atlas came along in 1964 with the maps from the Wartenburg Atlas being used as a basis and were expanded from 125-169 and all of them required some modification to better illustrate the new accompanying text, which was written from 'all available original sources and the best secondary authorities.'

The maps for all three atlases were compiled and made by officers of the US Army's Corps of Engineers. All of these were done in house at West Point by the Department of Military Art and Engineers, now the Department of History.

I used to have the two volume "Napoleon as a General" set, but managed to lose them over the course of a misspent youth.

That's the one we were issued when I took the courses in 1975-1976.

The maps were not as good as those in the Esposito/Elting Atlas.

Nice, but a pity they're so small.

And let's not overlook Ian Robinson's 'An Atlas of the Peninsular War'. though it is of only about 130 pages, it is nevertheless an excellent book and well worth every penny of the £25.00 GBP. despite the few errors.
