I have the free fortune deck and starter rules.

There are plenty of game reports out there but they do assume that the reader has some idea of what is going on. I would plan to re-purpose my Congo figures for a start.

Is is really possible to play the game with the starter rules and the 2 forces included? What else is available for free, I see some character cards on the Sally 4th site? Is there a basic 'this is what you do' outside of the rules?

Should I decide to buy the full rules and solo deck seem a good start. Are any of the other bits important to gameplay? What exactly is a pulp alley campaign?

I think you'll have much better luck just copying and pasting your question over on The Lead Adventure Forum in the Pulp section – which honestly should just be renamed the Pulp Alley section as 90% of the posts are regarding Pulp Alley :) – I would imagine you'll get immediate responses.

I have the full rule book, so I'm not sure how different the starter rules are. There are a lot of free 'leagues' to download, as well as token markers and blast templates. For me, if I were to recommend a purchase it would be the full rules book first, which comes with the fortune deck. I actually just purchased the solo deck over the weekend (hopefully it'll be here soon!) because of all the praise it was getting over on the LAF.

Think of the campaign like a movie – that's how I do it anyway – you can have 4 or 5 games played individually over time that complete an overall story. Think an Indiana Jones or James Bond movie broken into parts for individual games :) With the campaign your league can gain experience after each game to use towards new skills going forward too.
Good luck!

Pulp Alley also hosts a very helpful and informative gamers' forum. It's hard for me to comment on this directly because I'm unfamiliar with these new "starter" products, I was introduced by the original basic rules and card deck.

But I will add that these are very fun and easy to play rules and incredibly versatile and applicable.

A Pulp Alley campaign is a story told in a series of game scenarios. Every Pulp Alley scenario is a combination of fighting and dangerous adventure in which competing forces try to accomplish specific goals, called Plot Points, which further the story line of the campaign. For example, the Vice Alley campaign tells the story of a mysterious mobster who is trying to take over a city, and the attempts to thwart him, while Perilous Island will take the competing leagues around the world in search of a missing archaeologist.
To play Pulp Alley you need two forces of minis, called leagues, and something to fight about. The basic rulebook will give you a number of different scenario templates you can adapt to virtually any setting or genre, so Pulp Alley can be used for everything from medival fantasy to old west to SciFi settings. You can get started playing with just the Quick Start guide, the included card deck, and the leagues outlined in the guide. If you are playing solo, you will need, and want, the solo deck, which makes playing Pulp Alley a real gaming experience for a solo gamer. For more ideas on how to play, I would recommend visiting the Pulp Alley forum here: pulpalley.com/index.php

Hope this helps…I've been playing Pulp Alley for about two years, and I think it's the best tabletop game I've ever played, and I've played a few.

If what you mean by "Starter Rules" is the free Quick Start rules, you can very definitely play a game with them, but are restricted by the two sample leagues the rule set comes with. The "Pulp Alley: The Pulp Miniatures Game" comes with rules for generating your own leagues. You can put a lot of personality into these leagues.
