I was fortunate enough to be able to visit Vindolanda and the Roman army museum situated just behind Hadrians Wall. My blog post here

gives an overview of the visit but also contains a superb video explaining the organisation of the Roman Army. I hope that it is useful.

Nice write up, looks like a great place to visit.

I am compelled to point out that there should be an apostrophe in Hadrian's Wall. It's the wall of or belonging to Hadrian, not a wall made of Hadrians.

It's a great spot, and – as for locations and museums – its in a target rich environment: the wall has many great museums.

I haven't been for 5 years but it's a great place to visit.

I wanted to go there last month on my way back from Edinburgh but we didn't have time. Even more annoyed now I've seen your pictures!

Long time since I've been; the wall generally is great except in bad weather conditions when advice is 'avoid'!

My daughter the archaeologist spent 2 weeks last year digging Vindolanda, and she paid for the privilege. She was very positive about the place.

I am lucky enough to have seen Vindolanda developed over the last 30+ years…….it is one of my favourite places to visit in the area. I took the family there during August and they enjoyed it.

For me one of the most fascinating places is the museum where there are great displays on the Vindolanda tablets……talking to the museum staff I was told that there are plans to extend the museum again as they have a massive collection of preserved wooden artefacts that need specialist conditions to display them.

Recommended to any one visiting the area…..

Haven't been since 2005, but thoroughly enjoyed my visit and the weather was not bad for late April.

Take note. Roman Army Museum did not allow photography last time I was there. In addition, a combined ticket for the two sites is cheaper.

There didn't seem to be any restrictions on photography when I was there. Certainly none that I could see. I guess now that mobile phones have such reasonable cameras they are not so intrusive or reliant on flash. The combined ticket is definitely worth buying.

I've just come back from the site. What an enchanting place. Roman Army Museum tomorrow or Wednesday. Can't wait 8-)
Holidays in Northumberland are certainly recommended!

Cheers
