Some Robotech/Macross ships I did up, but haven't used yet (I stalled on finding a ruleset to adapt).

Nice, just in time, too, since Netfix is streaming the first Robototech series, bridging into the Robotech Masters stuff. yes, I know the hardcore Macross guys will insist they are separate series, but I like the mashup they did in the 1980s.

headzombie04 Oct 2016 9:49 a.m. PST

Where are they from?

Grignotage04 Oct 2016 10:28 a.m. PST

Those are really slick. Thanks for sharing!

SDF-1 is from an old model set (with the Zentradi flagship). The fighters are all from shape ways and the other ships are from Studio Bergstrom. I have a small Zentradi fleet as well, but it's not quite done yet.

Thanks for the kind comments!

Better delivery rate than the Robotech Kickstarter.

Well, those are just fantastic.

You MUST decide on a rules set, and get them into battle! Its a shame beyond redemption if such excellent miniatures, so beautifully painted, live their lives as shelf queens.

I'm guessing you've already contemplated Full Thrust? How about the first edition of Firestorm Armada? (The current edition is woeful at fighter combat, so I can't recommend that…)

Let's hear your parameters for suitable rules; I'm sure the TMP hive mind can provide insights and options. :)

Thanks for the love! DW--at this rate we'll see a Robotech live action movie before we see RRT wave 2!!!
MM-- I was exploring Colonial Battlefleet for a while, and then I was looking at Full Thrust. Full Thrust seemed like a better fit (the Nova Cannon rules fit the SDF-1/Macross's main gun pretty well). The conceptual difficulty I keep coming up against is how to balance the game because the Zentradi capital ships are so much larger and more powerful than the Earth ships. To keep it thematic the Zentradi fleet is never allowed to destroy the SDF-1, but I've found that to be a little hard to work in to these rule sets (what rules for disabling/capturing a ship?).
Finally, the physical model for the Zentradi flagship is so large I mounted it on two stands and it occupies 4-6 hexes (it's been a while since I had it on the mat), so I've been having a hard time figuring out the "right" movement and "collision" rules for it.

I see your point, Gulik. You're right about the issue of the Zentraedi trying to capture the Macross; it is a key feature of any game set in the first war.

With that in mind, I find myself swinging back to Firestorm Armada, which betrays its fantasy naval rules origins with a fairly big emphasis on boarding actions.

Another thought – the old Noble Armada game had a lot of gameplay dedicated to capturing enemy vessels. I know Mongoose Publishing did a version of A Call to Arms for that universe, so maybe that might provide a foundation to build on? The rules provide a good structure to create a characterful game, with special actions and characters.

Since I have seen your Mini's I have been on a Macross Binge.

Which shapways creators did you get the VF-1s from?

I haven't been able to find the battleoid ones. I ask, as this makes me want to get a small set, as I am planning on making a Star Blazer / Macross fleet, with Some Macross fighters and Battloids for my 6/15mm army. (My friends and I are doing a "Campaign" As we test rule sets. FiveCore (CC, BC, NSiS), Tomorrows War, StarGrunt 2, Dirtside 2, etc.)

But I really would like to have a full set of the minis that you got from shapways and I would love it if you could post some links if that is something that you can do.

Sorry I don't have a specific link or name even (I bought these a long time ago) but I believe they were from Semilucid Designs.

Ah thank you Sir! I was able to find it!

Gulik 23 – How did you go with this?

You might want to note that Breetai sided with the UN Spacy forces at the end of the series so you could have a balanced fight with rogue Zentradi ships on Earth's side.

Gulik2308 Oct 2018 8:36 p.m. PST

It was a lot of fun. Full Thrust is a good match I think, played it twice and had fun. I'll try to find the ship cards. Here's a link to a flikr album from a game. (Weird, I guess I don't have any pics of my full zentradi fleet. Guess that's a good reason to break it out this weekend!)

Haha yeah I thought about having Breetai switch, too, and face Dolza's fleet (or at least Kyron). It was going to be my excuse to buy a whole bunch of command ships from Bergstrom. All of these ships save the models (SDF1s and the Zentradi command ship), the Armors I scratch built and the mecha are from his collection.
I really love his stuff.
BTW--If anyone reading this does 3d modeling, I'd really love to see some fleet scale zentradi mecha stand ins. (I bet I'm not alone in that!)
