When the new Republic of France took over the war was it just the infantry reg'ts. de marche that lost its epaulettes or was it across the board and included Chasseurs a pied, Lanciers, Dragons, and the Cuirassier reg'ts. de marche? Thanks.

Depends on a lot of things but if the unit was a former imperial infantry unit that survived and made it back to fight again then I have assumed they wore the uniform they had until it wears out and then may get issued something else. Newly raised infantry units would wear the new uniforms.

I doubt the imperial cavalry ever switched uniforms. One thing to keep in mind that during the interval between 1870 and 1914 the French Army once again adopted the uniforms of the old empire.

In general the cavalry of the Republican phase was depot squadron and will be wearing more fatigue style uniforms.Same with infantry. Or at least that is what I extract from the Osprey MAA Volume on the Republican phase.

I wouldn't rely too heavily on that book: the plates were riddled with errors. Turcos in dark blue jackets was only the most glaringly obvious mistake of many. Osprey never commissioned that artist again.

I have both books and noticed the errors in the plates and some of the captions. Book two gives the impression that the Republican cavalry took to wearing kepis, rather than the regulation headwear. Does anyone know if that went for the Curassier as well?
