This came as a complete surprise: YouTube link Spike Milligan – once artilleryman in the North Africa campaign, victim of shell shock, and lifetime pacifist – was also a collector of toy soldiers. Milligan seems to have appreciated that toy soldiers are not the glorification of conflict, but (for he at least) a connection to childhood, that doesn't deserve to be broken by the demands of cynical, rational adulthood. I grew up listening to my Dad's tapes of the Goon Show. It seems Milligan's influence on me continues to this day! |
