Seriously, why do manufacturers put big honkin' blobs of metal at the bottom of figures? Why not just a nice thin plate so you have something to put glue on? Is it because they suck at sculpting feet?

I'm pretty sure it's for balance, so you can glue 30 figures at a time to bases without them falling over.

Mostly it's for casting purposes. The thin bases usually don't fill to the edges very well. In worst cases this can cause the feet to miscast.

I'm with you, Extra Crispy! I can't stand cast mounds on figures (this is one of my most consistent rants).

I tend to prefer tabs. I don't know why people dislike tabs; they seem like the best possible option for any use. No, I don't like slot bases, but tabs are far easier to remove than anything else, so I can base how I choose.

Just one word,… Plastics.

There is a great future in plastics.

I HIGHLY agree with 'the COL' on this.
Like many, I have cleaned, filed, primed, painted and Lugged my share of lead until I just got tired of the wt. Not a fan of slotted either, but they worked well.

Extra Crispy Why not just a nice thin plate so you have something to put glue on?
Thank You! I have often wondered the same. Though not so much w/ infantry, as a rule the bottom of the feet work just fine, but for the larger scale (28s) cavalry. A simple 'flat sqaure' under no more than 2 of the feet would make basing most cav figures an ease.
