Mark,

I've thought about doing the same project, also in 28mm, and the only figures I know of which are historically accurate are those same Perry Carlist War French, which at least include infantry, artillery and cavalry, albeit in very limited numbers.

If someone can point out more choices of figures I'd be very thankful as well!

Askari Miniatures. See if they have what you looking for.

Askari has a nice selection of figures, but they are all for the c.1880-1900 classic "Beau Geste" or 1920s Interwar periods, not the 1830-1847 Conquest of Algeria.

How about arabs/berbers?It's hard to tell which ones have weapons that are too modern.Tuaregs,I don't think they fought them during the conquest did they?I use to have a book on TR Bugeaurd which is the only book I have ever had on the subject, not many out there.

The Askari "North Africans" are a mixed bunch, a few of which are armed with muskets, so could be used for 1830s-1840s Algeria.

I believe there are enough 28mm Arab, Afghan, Baluchi, Barbary Pirate, and Turkish irregular troops, as well as Bashi Bazouks from the Egypt and Sudan campaigns, to field a tabletop army of Algerians. I've done a lot of figure conversion, so I might also use some of the nice WWI Arab irregular infantry and cavalry (maybe camelry too?) who would only need their bolt action rifles replaced by muskets.

In keeping with your original post, I think the real challenge to gaming the French Conquest of Algeria is the French.

The 1830;s-50's are an interesting period. You have the French in North Africa,The Seminole and Mexican wars here in the states, the British in Afghanistan,India and Africa,Revolutions in Europe, the Crimean War,The Indian Mutiny so lots of possibilities for figures of this era.
