Witches seem to me to be an under used horror trope. Switching to movies for a moment, there are tons of vampire, zombie, ghost, monster movies but only a few good witch stories despite their iconic ubiquity this time of year in decorations and Halloween paraphernalia. What's driving it? Not movies, and probably not books either but go ahead and prove me wrong please.

Let's stick to short story/novels only. As we did with the recent ghost one, include:

1) Title
2) Author
3) Link if possible

Dreams in the Witchhouse, H.P. Lovecraft: link

Hansel and Gretel, once you're old enough to really think about child predators, immolation, and cannibalism.

I agree that the version of the Bell Witch cited by Extrabio is the scariest, but would the Bell Witch count as being a witch?

"I agree that the version of the Bell Witch cited by Extrabio is the scariest, but would the Bell Witch count as being a witch?"

Back then, terms like witch and devil covered a lot more territory than they do now. Currently, The Bell Witch has been pigeonholed as a poltergeist.

(It irks me greatly that despite the fact that although two dozen well-written and thoroughly researched books about the Bell Witch have been published, the producers of the Bell Witch movie based their film on a sensationalist piece of garbage.)
