In keeping with the P-40 theme we played a later war SW Pacific game using Check Your 6 rules and 6mm minis.
This was based on a December 10, 1943 mission over Hansa Bay, New Guinea. The 7th Fighter Sqdn, 49th Fighter Grp sent a couple of flights of their P40Ns on a fighter sweep and came across a gaggle of 15 to 20 Oscars and Tonys.
The element of Capt Arland Stanton and Lt Bob DeHaven dove into the mess and soon had Ki61s and Ki43s in front, behind, and to their sides.
DeHaven wound up with no rudder control, hydraulic system, radio, and half his guns and managed to belly land back at Gusap after narrowly avoiding getting crushed by a C47 in his first landing run.
We started with 2) P40Ns with a +1 and a +2 (DeHaven) pilots and 3) Ki61s and 3) Ki43s--all Green pilots. Later another pair of Tonys came in. So we had a total of 8 Japanese fighters against the pair of P40Ns A nice game showing how decent pilots in a slightly better plane can hold their own against superior numbers.
