Just starting a 6mm WSS project, and I'm wondering whether it is more realistic to put the command stands, with flags and drums, at the back of the base rather than the front. For all my other C18th armies, I've placed them in the front rank, which is fine for parades, but if I'm depicting a firing line, should the standards be at the rear? Diagrams of British drill shows the drums at the rear, but the position of standards seems a little ambivalent. Some sources say they should be to the rear, others have them between two firings in the front. I've seen one source that indicates ensigns to the flank. Which would be the best place to depict them? |

A suggestion is that in gaming go with the visual and not the history Putting the command figures in the rear ranks may be historical but they look great up front |

I'm with Toronto: this is a visual hobby, so go with the visual. Lately in 5mm, I've been putting drummer and officer in the front rank, with standard-bearer and NCO behind. It's maximum color without having someone leveling a musket at the Colonel's head. |

Yeah, I'll likely go with the front rank option. For gaming it does look better, I agree. I just that nagging doubt of 'should I' go for the realistic positioning, even if it doesn't look as good. Thanks guys. |

I've recently converted my 15mm ImagiNations stuff to 8 figures on a 40x20mm base with 4 or 6 to a regiment. I made a command element of 4 figures on a 40x10mm. In column, they're at the head, in line they're behind. I just use them in identifying the unit. Try it for 6mm. Might work for you. |

I am experimenting with placement of ensigns, officers and musicians. Here are Victrix 28mm plastics painted as Austrian IR 50 von Stain, with drummers to rear, ensigns in middle and officers in front:
