I was wondering what color would the beret be for the British Airborne armor crews (Tetracs & M22 Locusts)? Would they be Airborne red or Tanker black? |

Were they actually apart of the airborne division, or were they attached to the airborne division? I don't recall any armored units directly in any airborne organization lists (this doesn't mean that they weren't though). |

1st Airborne Light Tank Squadron was an RAC unit and part of 1st and then 6th Airborne Divs, before being absorbed into 6th Airborne Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment at the beginning of 1944. They were part of their parent Divs rather than being attached for specific ops. I'm rubbish on uniforms, sorry, so can't speak on the berets, but I suspect maroon. Gary |

Most non para arms, engineers, medics, chaplains etc wore to maroon (note. Maroon)beret with their own cap badge. This is borne out by info from page 82 of 'Airborne Armour' by Keith Flint, who states that during an inspection, the King remarked on the number of different cap badges in the unit. He says all were entitled to wear the airborne beret, but wore it with their own cap badges. NB. the unit was formed from various regiments, RTR, 9th Lancers etc, and each individual wore the bade of his original 'parent' regiment, not RAC. |
