I'm currently refighting Jutland (alas by drawing lines on large pieces of paper) and I'm wondering what weather to classify Jutland as under the Fleet Action Immanent rules? This ruleset has nine different possible weather classifications (which then set fog, squalls, wind speed, etc), Force 2 to Force 10. These are meant to correspond to Beaufort force scale. I understand that the weather got worse as the day progressed, around 12,000 yards at 6pm. Based upon rolling average for visibility, I place this between Force 7 and Force 8 (the game allows changes of weather, so vacillations between these). Would this make sense for 6pm onwards? Also, any thoughts from about 3.30 pm onwards (when I start the battlecruiser action). Any information about visibility prior to 6pm would be most useful. |

Force 7 to 8 is near gale to gale force conditions, which were certainly not the case during Jutland. Since you're using a known date (with known weather and visibility conditions), I would use that instead (although you're going to need to do some digging to find that info). As for the exact Beaufort Scale, a rough guess would be Force 4 early on deteriorating to Force 5 by evening (and that's a rough guess, at best). |

We re-fought it using areas of fog/mist drifting across the battleship action. Transparent acetate provided the templates for the areas of poor visibility. The lighting situations in the run to the south and the battleship action were handled by decreasing or increasing the level of gunnery. 'Twas satisfactory. |

According to this website link it was Force 3 at 15.45. This page on google books seems to back this up (in the footnote) link Since I started the game at 15.30, I'll take that as Force 3 and roll for weather change every half hour after that. However, to simulate worsening weather conditions, I will ignore any result which improves the weather when at Force 5 or below. |
