I`m planning to release my Grand Manoeuvre Ancients Rules in several parts; the first part being, Rome`s wars with the Barbarians in the period from 112BC to 106 AD. I plan also to do Rome`s Civil and Servile wars in another set. There would be some overlap of these wars, the servile and civil wars being from 135-40 BC but I was wondering what you might think about this? Each rules set would be a pdf download, priced at £10.00 GBP each. Do you think that this would be reasonable treating them separately? |

Not very pricey but I wonder how much overlap there is – if a lot, you might want to lump them and say raise the price to 15GBP each |

Well I generally sell my pdf rules for £5.00 GBP a go but if there are details of campaigns or battles in there, that could justify the extra price. Looks like the rules themselves will be an element based system. |

Yes, they are element based and the package will include selected scenarios from the campaigns with OOB`s & army lists too. There are some features which may perhaps be of interest to gamers: Optional stratagems section in game the set up (this uses about 30 strategems from Frontinus and Polyaenus). Optional pre-battle speeches to select to improve army morale and combat factors. Optional "Heroic Death" or "Devotio" rules for when things start to go belly-up for either the Barbarians or the Romans respectively. |

Yes thats something often overlooked. I think one battle was one by Rome when their commander plunged into the midst of the enemy link |

Yes, that`s the guy… primarily I`ve included "Heroic Death" as a means allow barbarians to win on their own terms. I still say that everyone knows and remembers the name of "Spartacus" |

Yes, but ask anyone else (people who do not study history in any way) and they most probably will not know who finally defeated him at the battle of Silarus. A good few wargamers will not even know this or be able to recall immediately! And as for Boudica? I think my point also applies! Losers on the face of it… But, for all this, I think we have to ask why warbands charged impetuously? What thoughts had THEY for their personal safety or for an after-life? See in Mus`s case how that self-sacrifice was considered a most honorable and noble thing, and it would have been so even in the case of a defeat. Admittedly, it is a different kind of win – it`s a moral victory to THE CELT at the time and not merely a consolation prize or a "wooden spoon"! |

They sound rather interesting. What's the reason for stopping at 106AD? I like the idea of the heroic death – although it doesn't seem to have helped Hasdrubal. |

But, for all this, I think we have to ask why warbands charged impetuously? What thoughts had THEY for their personal safety or for an after-life? I think we can answer that one, status in the tribe and rewards in heaven. Fighting naked was also another little quirk. |

Stopping at 106, ends with Trajan`s campaigns against the Dacians. |

Actually going to the end of Trajan`s reign I could also include the Parthian Wars. |

This is the plan for the first part of my Ancients Rules… So, being slightly expanded, I hope there`ll be enough to interest gamers with Barbarian armies here: Grand Manoeuvre – Rome & the Barbarians. Jugurthine War 112–106 BC Cimbrian War: 112-101 BC. Rebellions in Spain: war with the Celtiberi 98 & 82 BC Sertorian War 80-72BC Caesar`s Conquest of Gaul: 58-51 BC. Roman-Parthian Wars: Crassus at Carrahae 53 BC Roman-Parthian Wars: Publius Ventidius Bassus 39-38 BC Roman-Parthian Wars: Mark Antony 36 BC German campaigns: Lupia River 11 BC, Teutoburg Forest 9 AD & Idistaviso16 AD British Resistance and Rebellion: Medway 43 AD, Caer Cradoc AD 51, Boudica 61 AD and Mons Graupius 83 AD. Roman-Parthian Wars: The Armenian War of 58–63 AD Dacia: Domitian`s raids 85-87 AD & Trajan`s campaigns in 101-106 AD Roman-Parthian Wars: Trajan's Parthian campaign 116 AD As it will take me some time to get scenarios and army lists for these battles/campaigns/wars together, I think I will make information for the Social, Civil and Servile wars available separtely. I`ve no idea when this will be ready… next year sometime ? |
