I'm getting ready to start a new project involving 25/28mm French and British line infantry for the French and Indian War, and was wondering how others base theirs. Black Powder recommends a frontage of either 15mm or 20mm per figure. Is the former too wide? or the latter too crowded? Do you base your figures farther apart in order to reflect the somewhat looser order frequently used, especially later in the war? Do you use double or single ranks of figures? Just considering different basing options and was wondering how others do theirs. Thanks! |

I use 20mm because this fits best with the SYW rule set I use Most of my F&IW (which I call SYW in North America) figs are individually based on 20X20 stands but for the regulars I base them 2X2 on 40 X 40 mm stands |

I base on 2 x 2 inches. But I mainly play skirmish games for FIW. I use black powder fow AWI. My skirmish figures are on single bases. Matthew |

If used for skirmish, I base them on metal washers. You can count on one hand the linear battles fought. But for linear battles, I mounted mine with 3 on 1"x2" bases. But, you can go both. Base on steel washers. Then get magnetized bases in the footprint you desire for battalions or regiments. |

My F&IW 28mm figures are all singly based on steel UK pennies and I group them on appropriate sized Warbases sabots with magnets installed. link
If you can't get steel pennies then look at the MDF penny with magnetic solution. If you are looking for 2x2 magnetic bases explicitly for Black Powder then Warbases do them too. link

I look at the F&IW period more of skirmish action than a linear one. So like most whom have posted here, I base my lads on 1" steel fender washers. And, like most here, if I need the regulars to form into a linear/column formation, then I have pre-cut bases to insert those 1" fender washers in. P. |

I use 1" Litko round bases, thick ones. They seem to get the job done very well. Single oblong thick Litko bases for cavalry. I use TSATF rules, I like simple. |

I use 1x1 square bases. I use different rule sets and they work for me. |

Everything I have in F&I War is mounted on fender washers. I'm beginning to wonder about that, however. There just doesn't seem to be enough linear battles to justify basing 6 figures to a stand. On the other hand, it would save a lot of movement. |

I'm going for 50mm squares with 2 or 3 figs per base and a lot of grass and rocks etc. Might have a crack at it with one of the Dan Mersey rule books -maybe Dragon Rampant. |

I base my figs for 18th. century games on art board bases 15mm x 25mm in size. In singles, because that allows for the greatest flexibility for different rules. I then move them on movement trays made of half a CD case. |

Rangers, Compagnies Franches, Indians and other skirmish troops are mounted singly on 20mm square bases with rounded corners. Close order troops are mounted in 4s on 40mm squares; I have enough single figures to 'make change' as required when casualties are taken. |
