Dear All,

I have put together some info about the relevant formations which the British in Team Yankee are going to be based on:

Many thanks! Very much looking forward to this, but you have given a great starting overview!

Armiesarmy07 Sep 2016 9:21 a.m. PST

Excellent!!

Chuckaroobob07 Sep 2016 12:02 p.m. PST

More Chieftains, more better!

Navy Fower Wun Seven07 Sep 2016 1:46 p.m. PST

Thanks chaps!

Lion in the Stars07 Sep 2016 3:38 p.m. PST

More CVR(T)s, more better!

nickinsomerset07 Sep 2016 11:56 p.m. PST

Lion, the QDGs also had CVR(W) Fox, so a little more variety. 1985 saw the transition of TFE/later 33 (UK) Armd Bde replace 19 Inf Bde and QDG move to Wolfenbottle as force Recce.

Tally Ho!

Lion in the Stars08 Sep 2016 12:21 p.m. PST

Cool for variety (and it looks like QRF makes a Fox), but for some stupid reason I just love the CVR(T)s. Cute little baby tanks!

CAG 1908 Sep 2016 3:34 p.m. PST

QDG were in the UK at Debden until 1987. They took over from 9/12L in the recce role after that. I thought they were a Recce Regiment (Tracked UK) and not Recce Regiment (UK) so didn't have fox……but were scorp/scimitar mix…but Nick did time in 3 Div and I was with 4 Armd so would have a better recollection of what they came to BAOR with on exercise.

TFE and all the other TF's had gone back to being brigades by 1983. 33 Armd moved to 3 Div in 1986 prior to that date it was part of 4 Armd Div.

I have given sparker some othe info such as where the missing Type 57 Regiment from 6 Armoured went during the airmobile trial and also the change over of LRATGW from RA to RAC

capt jimmi08 Sep 2016 8:50 p.m. PST

Good work Sparker !

nickinsomerset08 Sep 2016 11:34 p.m. PST

CAG, they also had FOX, 5 Tp, B Sqn,got a photo of me in the hanger somewhere! Not sure if all Sqns had a Fox Troop. The move to Wolfenbuttle was 85/86, a certain one of our Sgts (Geordie, kicked out of Austrailia on Long Look) was attached to the Regt and on day one good a rifting for saluting a Subaltern! Hopefully you have had words about a certain missing Division!

Tally Ho!

CAG 1909 Sep 2016 9:46 a.m. PST

Nick, thanks. Yeah mentioned the minor oversight of 4 Armd ;)
Can't find anything which says 9/12L left early from Wolfenbuttel. Northampton barracks records say March 1987 for QDG move in (doesn't mean the advance party hadn't gone over early, I remember when RDG handover to 1 RTR the advance party were in place for a good year before the main body).
Interested in the Foxes, any chance these are WMR stocks held for the reinforcement to BAOR that QDG just happened to have a bit of beneficial use of on occasion ?

nickinsomerset09 Sep 2016 10:07 a.m. PST

Dates are from the QDG Facebook site and the Troop (Farmer Benny's) we had on exercise with us in 86 were down from Wulfenbuttle. Not sure why they had Fox on the orbat, just that they were disliked!

Tally Ho!

Lion in the Stars09 Sep 2016 11:13 a.m. PST

Though to be honest, I'm more likely to do Berlin Brigade for Brits. That crazy camo!

nickinsomerset09 Sep 2016 12:27 p.m. PST

Lion,

Paint up a few and have a scenario where a Coy have been at Sennelager on a firing camp and unable to return to Berlin at the outbreak of hostilities!

Tally Ho!

Navy Fower Wun Seven11 Sep 2016 10:50 p.m. PST

Apparently in my post I missed out one of the BAOR armoured division, the 4th. No disrespect intended, my post was mainly about the 4th Armoured BRIGADE as this seems to be the formation Iron Maiden is based on…

However I would be very grateful if someone better informed than I and who is exercised about this omission wanted to post a complete BAOR orbat down to Regimental level for August 1985.

Otherwise I will get to it…
– in due course!

nickinsomerset12 Sep 2016 12:09 a.m. PST

1 & 4 Divs were the "Front Line" Divs. 3 Div was the reserve. 4 Bde being the main Armd Reserve, and 6 Airmobile a BAOR reserve whose assets would deploy wherever required.

Tally Ho!

Navy Fower Wun Seven12 Sep 2016 3:42 a.m. PST

4 Bde being the main Armd Reserve

Good to know. Explains the armour heaviness!

CAG 1912 Sep 2016 11:50 a.m. PST

Anyone gaming this period using the 10mm range by Pendraken?

What rules would suit best for games in that scale?

Not my post about BAOR in 1985……….okay which board is it on

CAG 1912 Sep 2016 11:56 a.m. PST

Now updated with info from Andy, Simon and Nick and presented in a chart format:

CAG 1912 Sep 2016 11:31 p.m. PST

Change the CVR Scorp/Scimitar mix to just Scimitar for the Corps Recce. QDG are Scorp/Scimitar mix

Recce Plns in Inf Bns are Scimitar
Recce Tps in Armd Regrs are Scorp
AT Tps in Armd Regts are FV438

Each Div has an AD Bty (attached to the M109 Regt in peace time for admin) with 36 Javelin/Spartan teams

Navy Fower Wun Seven13 Sep 2016 3:22 a.m. PST

And the 2 Royal Anglian weren't both in 11 Armd Bde and 19 Inf Bde at the same time!

Just going around in circles here, in my TY universe I'm going to call it 2RAR in 19 Inf Bde and 1 RRF in 11th Armd Bde…

CAG 1913 Sep 2016 3:46 a.m. PST

No its a typo on my part. 19 Inf Bde is 3 Royal Anglian

nickinsomerset13 Sep 2016 3:52 a.m. PST

CAG, whilst at Safron Walden, QDG also had FOX, 5 Tp, B SQN are the ones I visited, not sure if each Sqn had a Tp, although one former QDG says they had a Sqn worth. In 85 Blowpipe was still in service.

Tally Ho!

CAG 1913 Sep 2016 4:03 a.m. PST

AFAIK by 1985 the change over was complete,
Javelin in BAOR, Blowpipe in the TA AD Regts.

as to QDG the only explanation I can find is that QDG wasn't a Tracked UK regiment but a UK Regiment
"There was a third organisation for regular forces, the Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment (UK), which had two tracked reconnaissance squadrons of Scorpions and one wheeled reconnaissance squadron of Foxes" but I can't find a definitive as to why

Tally Ho!

CAG 1913 Sep 2016 10:25 a.m. PST

KAPE – Keeping the Army in the Public Eye (PR Drinking fest)

Right O, conundrum nearly resolved after some more digging (hopefully but who knows)

1982 QDG ago to Wimbish as a Type B Armoured Recce Regiment (UK) after their tour in NI. This gives them Scorps, Scimitars and Fox. (I am just checking if the source for this has the date of changes for all the Recce Regts to the post 1982 structures)

By November 1984 they have converted to an Armoured Recce Regiment (Tracked UK) changing the fox for Scorps and Scims.
In 1985 (28 June) they are reviewed by the Queen Mother at Wimbish.
In 1987 they arms plot to Wolfenbuttel as Armoured Recce Regt (Tracked) (BAOR) going all Scims

So for TY as part of 3 Div the foxes were gone by 1985

Reactionary14 Sep 2016 4:56 a.m. PST

I learnt fencing to County level from scratch at school from a 4/7 Dragoon Guards KAPE team. Not many people know that!

Old Wolfman14 Sep 2016 7:18 a.m. PST

Might check into it.

Andy P06 Oct 2016 4:23 a.m. PST

Why is 2 Div missing from ORBAT?

CAG 1906 Oct 2016 2:04 p.m. PST

Because by 1985 2 Div had become 2 Inf Div and was charged with rear sy so I hadn't listed it as it doesn't really have any of the equipment in the TY schedule. I have the 1985 ORBAT for it
