Gowan's Bay Gowanus Road Gowanus Heights Gowanus Pass ??Guan are just some of the versions one comes across

What is the core form of this name, if there is one? Is it plain old Gowan or is that an error too?

It was the name given to the first Dutch settlement in what is now Brooklyn, a borough of New York.

So, my guess is that the name is Dutch in origin.

Apparently it is a Dutch surname/patronymic.

Yes, thanks, but which/what?

According to this, it most likely comes from the name of the native chief who owned the land originally and sold it to the Dutch, although there is a possible link to the Dutch word for a bay (the former sounds more likely though):-

Whatever the source of the name, the Gowanus canal is now the most toxic body of water in NYC, nicknamed the lavender lake. Anyone entering it today is advised to wear a hazmat suit.

The laughably titled Gowanus Expressway is one of the slowest roads in the city, except perhaps at 3 AM.

The Old Stone House (moved from the original location and rebuilt) has a diorama of the attack of the Maryland Regiment.

We were just at the Old Stone House in Brooklyn last month. The diorama is excellent and they are redoing the museum portion of the House to greatly improve it.

It is worth seeing.

The Gowanus canal is famous for it's whitefish. You would have to be a native New Yorker to know what that means.

The Vechte-Cortelyou House- where Lord Stirling led the Marylanders in charges against Fraser's 71st.

So, perhaps an obscure Indian name. That would acount for the Hiberno-Latinate confusion.
