Now, I am not a huge proponent of decorative bases for minis. Not opposed to them, either. But my philosophical bent on the subject makes me wonder what fantasy Dwarf-type players prefer in a decorative base.

Flat Green
Green with Grass
Dirt and Grass
Dirt and Stones
Flat Grey Stone
Rocky Grey Stone
Gravelly
Sprinkled with Ore Nuggets
Sprinkled with Gems

Something Else I Missed?

OK. Two Disclaimers: (1) My philosophical bent plus I have accumulated a number of Dwarves through donation and trade and don't play them, so I want to base them up for sale. (2) I thought "gravelly" wasn't a word, but spellcheck didn't barf on it and I pulled down the dictionary from the shelf. It is a word.

Dirt and grass and stones.

I'd match their bases to the principle terrain you'll be fighting over. Dirt, grass and stones for overland battles, stone for underground, dungeon themed games.

I prefer flat gray stones--paving stones, more or less--but I tend to wind up with gravel. So much quicker and easier. My halflings are grassed, of course.

I keep wanting a system under which the army breakpoint is worse if the troops aren't based to match the terrain. Do your Imperial Storm Troopers in an urban black/gray base to clean out Mos Eisley, but if you send them into the Ewoks' woods, they'll comeback faster than they went in.

Lately I've been painting bases to resemble flagstone floors.

I base mine just grass – very boring, eh?.
