Steampunk miniature games and scenarios are based on popular science fiction and fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. Are you a fan?

I must admit it doesn't do anything for me personally, sorry.

How does it differ from Victorian Science Fiction?

Winston Smith31 Aug 2016 6:34 p.m. PST

"Steampunk?"
No. I hate it. Nothing but corsets and rivets.
But Victorian Science Fiction on the other hand is fantastically awesome.

I hate everything with "punk" in its title, with the exception of music. It's a loathsome aesthetic.

Winston Smith31 Aug 2016 6:39 p.m. PST

To the OP.
You are exhibiting a perfect example of the PROPER definition of "begging the question".

peterx Supporting Member of TMP31 Aug 2016 6:43 p.m. PST

Not really.I am not opposed to it, just not drawn to it.

53Punisher31 Aug 2016 7:05 p.m. PST

Yes, I find it very creative--especially gadgets, furniture, etc.

lugal hdan31 Aug 2016 7:12 p.m. PST

Not really. I mean, who doesn't like girls in sexy corsets and guys with amazing facial hair, but "Steampunk" and VSF are both overdone to me at this point.

Though I did like "Brisco County, Jr." That was VSF, right?

skippy000131 Aug 2016 7:35 p.m. PST

Sword, Shotgun and Science!…yes!

War Monkey31 Aug 2016 7:37 p.m. PST

Yes, as well I like all the different gadgets, vehicles, and furniture.

And let us not to forget sex women in tight corsets and cleavage wink

Col Durnford31 Aug 2016 7:49 p.m. PST

No

Hafen von Schlockenberg31 Aug 2016 8:30 p.m. PST

Yes,any genre can be overdone and cheapened,as noted by this gentleman:

I want to like Steampunk but I have difficulty doing so. I do sort of like Victorian Science Fiction, and I have difficulty distinguishing between the two.

Perhaps we need a ground breaking, massive movie to bring Steampunk to the masses, and to bring us a basis for definition.

I love it, when it's well done.

Look at the ladies. When they wear corsets on top of their clothes, it's steampunk. When they wear corsets under their clothes, it's Victorian science fiction.

With that sorted, I like steampunk as an idea (even as a hobby/lifestyle idea, even tho I'm not partaking in the scene) but don't often see it implemented, insofar as we are talking about games. Steampunk is used (albeit less so these days perhaps -- one assumes "peak steampunk" was reached sometime around the turn of the decade) as catchword for stuff that isn't, particularly in regards to the somewhat elusive word "punk". For a well-known example, WARMACHINE used to be touted as a "steampunk fantasy" even tho there is not much if any "punk" in it (the related RPG might be a different matter but I don't know about that) -- it's basically a militant industrial fantasy setting, but slapping that on the game wouldn't have helped sell it half as well as the s-word.

I'm with Javelin98. Well done = yes.

Visually kind of cool looking but as a game – no.

tnjrp -- that is probably the best explanation that I have read.

Cool to look at, but gaming it? No.

Dynaman878901 Sep 2016 7:25 a.m. PST

I may play it but I won't buy it. I'll watch it but in general will not seek it out. I did kinda like "The Wild Wild West" movie however, which I am aware puts me into a unique classification of nutty.

Hafen von Schlockenberg01 Sep 2016 8:04 a.m. PST

Good one, tnjrp! May I suggest a slight variation?

When they wear corsets: VSF.
When you can SEE the corsets: Steampunk.

No.

I do like Victorian Science Fiction.

ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa01 Sep 2016 8:45 a.m. PST

I like the aesthetic of steampunk, and dieselpunk, if well done in models. But I'd use them out of their intended context.

Not totally taken with VSF for a number of reasons (personally I'm more a fan of transhuman sci-fi).

VSF is ok.

Lee Brilleaux Fezian03 Sep 2016 8:51 a.m. PST

Steampunk in Victoriana for people who like to hot glue gears on their underwear, and have never heard of Gladstone.

billthecat03 Sep 2016 6:06 p.m. PST

No "steampunk" for me…. Silly name anyway… Punk? Really?
But VSF can be okay, depending on the vision… Lots of fuzzy definitions here.

Hafen von Schlockenberg06 Sep 2016 10:06 p.m. PST

The term was a sort of tongue-in-cheek,off-the-top-of-his-head suggestion by SF author K.W.Jeter,in a letter to Locus magazine, playing on the "cyberpunk" genre,to classify his,and a few other author's, similar works set in the 19th century. Here's the Science Fiction Encyclopedia:

Definitely. I don't do cosplay, but I have a few items that can be considered steampunk.

I have the Castle Falkenstein rpg, which is actually VSF/fantasy. I used to run a campaign a while back. I also have the Airship Pirates rpg, which was based on Abney Park's songs, but I haven't played it yet.

For those of you unfamiliar with Abney Park, here's one of their songs.
