Sounds like a good idea to me! USArmy wants to replace .50 cal MGs with Apache helo's 30mm M230-LF canon in Recon Platoon vehicles by 2019. Goal is to produce overwhelming firepower during recon encounters with enemies. I can see SpecOps and regular army stealing these vehicles the first chance they get. link |

About the best idea I've heard all Summer! They should put some of them on their dune buggies as well. Those guns should be pretty lightweight, so it might work. If not, at least give them a 20mm cannon. |

they have trying out the 30mm ASP cannon on .50cal mount for around 20 years. |

Fewer things to break on an M2HB. Bigger gun means scouts more likely to fight than scoot. |

Hope not. I figure scouts will prefer to remain unseen and perform mission as they are professionals. But if they top a ridge and run into a mechanized unit on the other side, they have the firepower to engage and escape. |

Yes, Scouts need only to fire if they get into trouble. Otherwise … they should be "ghosts" … Just like the M2 Bradley IFV/CFV. Those TOWs are to get them out of trouble. Not go tank hunting and go Toe2Toe with an MBT. That would most likely be an error … |

Well I would much prefer a system that puts like six of these together into one system.
You can never go wrong with HE. |

30mm M789 round is HEDP, both armor piercing and explosive. It launches from a chain gun for higher rpm, better range & accuracy and flatter trajectory. |

30mm is also heavier and larger than .50cal or 40mm GL, so the Scouts will have fewer rounds available. And lesser variety of ammo types, too. As long as the M230 gets stuck on a CROWS mount instead of an armored turret, it's not a terrible idea. |

As this proposal is for mounting on future OshKosh JLTVs, I would assume that the mountings will be as low-profile as possible for recon purposes. Don't think they'll carry anything beyond HEDP. |

30mm Auto GL [Mk.19 IIRC ?] … what is not to like ?!? |

Saw this video over at Tank and AFV News back in July: link The 30mm cannon has a nice authoritative sound to it when firing! :) |

Just like when a .50cal is firing … sounds like a jackhammer … |

Seems a bit of overkill for what is basically a truck mounting. Does a truck really need a 30 mike mike? The mounting will be far heavier, far more complex and prone to breakdown, and hold less ammo. Wouldn't it be more prudent to have a Mark 19 and a Ma Duece both on there, or a Ma Duece and an AT4 or two in the cabin? |
Lion in the Stars | 01 Sep 2016 6:46 a.m. PST |
Well, the M230 chain gun is all of 56kg/120lbs, "only" 40lbs heavier than Ma Deuce. Stuck on a RWS mount, it's not particularly heavier than say, mounting both a .50cal and Mk19. The killer is going to be ammo capacity. 30mm ammo is heavy. |

Seems a bit of overkill for what is basically a truck mounting. Well you never know what you might run into. Better to have more firepower than you may need. Than to find out you're "out gunned" … |
