Hmmm, interesting question, since so many go back to youthful memories of reading them. I'd say offhand though, Hound of the Baskervilles, with some love for the Red-Headed League and Bruce-Partington Plans too.

The Solitary Cyclist, and A Scandal in Bohemia.

mwindsorfw25 Aug 2016 1:33 p.m. PST

The Adventure of the Illustrious Client because it has the best line, "…you remove the band from a cigar before lighting it; otherwise you'll be put down for a bounder." On TV, Jeremy Brett delivered the line in a way that dripped with disdain.

mwindsorfw, there will NEVER be a better Holmes than Jeremy Brett!

Kropotkin30325 Aug 2016 2:56 p.m. PST

Just started reading them all again.

Study in Scarlet was excellent, I devoured them as a teenager and it has been a happy thing that they are even better now. I guess when I was a teenager I was rushing them.

+1 for Jeremy Brett, but the production values and keeping them true to the written stories also make those series an excellent thing.

Speckled Band tied with Hound of the Baskervilles.

Brett was good, but Rathbone was THE Holmes--though more so on radio than in the movies.

"A Study In Emerald" by Neil Gaiman in the anthology Shadows Over Baker Street, 2003.

I always like Hounds of the Baskerville. It was my first Holmes story and will always be my favorite

Anthon25 Aug 2016 4:08 p.m. PST

Hound of the Baskervilles, followed by The Yellow Face.

The Hound, but all are GREAT!

Extrabio1947 Supporting Member of TMP25 Aug 2016 5:43 p.m. PST

It must be The Hound!

rmaker25 Aug 2016 6:12 p.m. PST

Probably Hound of the Baskervilles, though choosing is hard.

But I also love Anderson & Dickson's Hoka Holmes pastiche The Adventure of the Misplaced Hound.

jgibbons25 Aug 2016 6:13 p.m. PST

Hound… Ad i like the Musgrave Ritual for te ECW tie in

More importantly, is there a bad Holmes story? I confess I have been a fan since middle school! Oh, I agree that Brett WAS Holmes!

If you get a chance, the BBC did a first rate audio presentation of Holmes vs Dracula. It is quite good.

Thanks

Speckled Band
Crooked Man

I like the one with the dragon and that little hairy-footed dude…

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP26 Aug 2016 4:18 a.m. PST

The one where Sherlock shoots the Danish man in the head.

genew4926 Aug 2016 7:34 a.m. PST

The Hound of the Baskervilles

parrskool26 Aug 2016 8:00 a.m. PST

Douglas Wilmer wasn't a bad Holmes, either.

Scandal in Bohemia tied with The Sign of the Four; very difficult to choose just one…

Perris070726 Aug 2016 4:07 p.m. PST

Hound, Sign of the Four, and Speckled Band. Can't choose one.

GoodOldRebel27 Aug 2016 3:03 p.m. PST

Hound of the Baskerville's, Sign of Four and The Crooked Man

KTravlos26 Sep 2016 2:48 p.m. PST

The Adventure of the Illustrious Client
Gruner was truly despicable and terrifying villain.
and

Speckled Band

Brett was a wonder in both.

The Red-Headed League
Silver Blaze

Jeremy Brett was Sherlock Holmes. No one else comes close.
David Burke was the best Doctor Watson ever.

Since Brett was taken from us, I had not watched anyone else's portrayal. How do you improve on perfection? That is until recently. I got dragged to see "Mr. Holmes" starring Ian McKellen. It was pretty good.

I refuse to see the Robert Downey Jr version of Holmes. Brett has spoiled me forever.

Old Contemptibles26 Sep 2016 11:58 p.m. PST

Well I have to admit I did see Brent Spiner play Holmes on the TNG series. But I don't count that.

GoodOldRebel27 Sep 2016 5:16 a.m. PST

Certain reservations aside regarding the Robert Downey Jnr films or me Jude Law's interpretation of Watson felt quite close to the books?

Mr Holmes, while an excellent film could have been about anyone? I enjoyed it but there was nothing intrinsically 'Holmesian' about it?

Supercilius Maximus27 Sep 2016 6:25 a.m. PST

Whilst Rathbone was quite good, I never understood the way that Nigel Bruce played Watson – the type of "nice but dim" chap Holmes would never have shared his time with. I suspect that Brett's appeal comes from playing Holmes in a series, so you saw him more often than most incarnations. Much as I dislike him personally, Blunderbatch is quite good, although I think that Watson and Mycroft are more interesting characters – and played by (even) better actors.

GoodOldRebel27 Sep 2016 2:10 p.m. PST

The way Nigel Bruce played Watson differs between Hound of the Baskerville's and the rest of the series. His buffoonery was so utterly un-Watson-like?

I am a fan of Edward Hardwicke's Watson

KTravlos28 Sep 2016 6:56 a.m. PST

I liked the Watson played by Colin Blakey in "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes" Law also reminds me of him.

The Untold Tale of the Giant Sumatran Rat.

And then The Reluctant Bride, if only for Paris Jefferson!

Old Contemptibles29 Sep 2016 8:14 a.m. PST

Edward Hardwicke's Watson was good too. He looked so much like David Burke that for a long time I hadn't noticed that he wasn't Burke.

GoodOldRebel30 Sep 2016 8:19 a.m. PST

Non-canon I know but I really like the story 'The Tangled Skein' …..was thoroughly prepared to hate Holmes vs Dracula but it is terribly well done!

Must correct self: The Noble Bachelor, which was called The Eligible Bachelor in the BBC dramatizations.

And the missus votes for: The Speckled Band; The Sign of the Four; The Red-Headed League; Silver Blaze.

Honorable mention to the two "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episodes where Mr. Data played Holmes (on the holodeck), which are tremendous homages to the Doyle stories, made with care and love. And that Moriarty must be the best Moriarty ever!
