For those of you who play Ogre, I have some questions:

What version do you use? (Does it matter?)
Do you use miniatures, chits or the new paper miniatures?
Normal points per side?

Any other suggestions?

I have finally decided to give it a try and I'm looking for any information you want to share.

Thanks

Moe

I don't play too often, but I play original board when I have limited space and time, OGRE miniatures when time permits, and Deluxe Ogre ( With minis ) when there's plenty of space and time. :)

They all have advantages – the Deluxe certainly is great for young players with very clear large pieces, lends itself well to the use of minis, and has a spectacular look to it; the board game sets up quickly and is able to be carried anywhere and needs only a table to play on.

Most of the scenarios in each game work brilliantly and are great challenges.

I use the OGRE miniatures when I play these days. Originally, I had the ultra cheap paper OGRE game.

I play the good old Metagaming OGRE/GEV combined, with all the expansions released at the time (Shockwave, et.al.)

jfleisher24 Aug 2016 1:59 p.m. PST

Ogre miniatures almost exclusively, about once a year I play the giant deluxe boardgame version.

I have the big deluxe version, but what I WANT to do is 3mm minis on the same board with a 6mm OGRE

I use ORGES as Titans in Epic …

And I still have the original little paper version released in the '80s, IIRC ?

Ogre Designer's Edition with minis, primarily. Ogre miniatures when I have the time.

The original Ogre/GEV are still a lot of fun with chip counters, and it takes up considerable less space than ODE.

Also, Future War Commander has stats for Combine and Paneuropean forces, but I admit I haven't had the chance to play them that way.

I play some other 6mm, and most of the Ogre mini seem small in comparison. Except the ogres themselves..

I have the old paper pocket game and have played it, but have never played any other version.

DesertScrb25 Aug 2016 1:39 p.m. PST

I use the Ogre DE rules for all my games, whether hex & counter or minis. I usually play with the minis on a game mat with four-inch hexes. Counters can be on the microgame maps or the Deluxe Ogre and Deluxe GEV maps.

Yes, ORGE 6mm is a bit small again save for the ORGEs themselves. But their Infantry is a more like 10mm.

OGREs are sculpted in 1/285 scale. They look great next to my GHQ micro armor trucks: link

Moe the Great26 Aug 2016 7:57 a.m. PST

I think they look small next to those trucks.. maybe it's just me? A MK V or VI ogre which can lay waste to a city should be bigger than a couple of trucks.

I might play it with 3mm.

Mostly Miniatures now, but rarely the ole original paper version.

For those of you who use Minis, do you use the miniatures rules? or just use them on the grid map and replace the tokens with minis?

nukesnipe30 Aug 2016 9:57 a.m. PST

Both. There really isn't much difference between the board game and miniatures rules. I find my 19-year old son prefers playing the board game with miniatures to pushing chits, although he enjoys the pocket edition quite a bit.

That's the impression that I get from a lot of people..Use minis where they can, use tokens when they need to.

fullerena31 Aug 2016 3:25 a.m. PST

Ogres are actually pretty small, as giant nuclear cybertanks go. I don't remember the official size off the top of my head, but there's a reason they need a sensor tower, and it's not just doing Jaws impressions as they roll along the riverbed.

Last couple of games I played were using the pocket reprint, the standard Mk III attacking scenario. It's a shame I didn't break out the full DE, but on the other hand it's tiny and convenient and it's still playing Ogre, so can't complain.

Logain08 Sep 2016 6:42 p.m. PST

What would people suggest to start with, in terms of how many stands of each kind in 3mm? What size playing surface would you want with 1 inches hexes?

DesertScrb14 Sep 2016 11:20 a.m. PST

The basic Ogre map (the one with craters and orange/brown terrain) is 15 by 23 hexes. The GEV map (with forest, swamp, town, and water hexes) is 23 by 23. If you're doing your own hex mat, I'd go with at least a 2' by 2' board.
