Can you guys recommend a good skirmish rules for a handful of 28mm figures? I have been looking at all the "oldhammer" sites, and I have about 40 of the old space marines, and the first boxed set of plastic marines and a bunch of metal orks. Any help? |

John: 5150 is great for what you want. There is a free "lite" version called Chain Reaction: link They have variants for WW2, Fantasy, Vietnam, etc. |

FiveCore will give you a nice "Rogue Trader" feel, it is designed for 5-15 figures but handles 20 comfortably. |

Sounds a bit like you're after something in the style of Deadzone: link At a bit of a stretch, you could also try Infinity (it's not really a game you are supposed to play with a uniform troop composition): infinitythegame.com Urban War would work for Marines but there isn't really much in it that Orks can be comfortably be counted as. With the caveat that some people may be less prone to failing the suspension of disbelief test in that regard.* urbanwarthegame.com There are of course some generic games too that you can use, but most of them tend to not be for really small skirmish, unlike the aforementioned games. Then again, assuming around 20-30 minis per side, even Defiance would work: mj12games.com/defiance --- *) whereas a gaming buddy used to complain that you can't use miniatures carrying weapons with curved clips as stand-ins for troops armed with plasma weapons, and I think he was saying that only partially tongue-in-cheek |

I second the recommendation of Extra Crispy for any of the THW rule sets. |

John: Well, put it this way. I'll have another box ready to go next week. And I'm working up to a small fantasy project in 28s. So, pretty happy! |

The Infinity rules and all the markers you need to play are free to download, so the only thing you'd be out is time and bandwidth. You do need the markers, though you could get creative with diorama-types instead of basic words. This is particularly easy with camo markers (I found some ~28mm papercraft "Snake in a Box" models to use for my camo markers ) Though as tnjrp mentioned, Infinity is not really about uniform troop composition. A typical Infinity force has 2-3 power armored infantry and 5-8 lighter infantry. |
