I was under the impression that mounted officers of the Grenadiers and Chasseurs a pied had a penchant for black horses as the senior regiments. I have trawled the net and my reference books but can not find any definative evidence that this is the case. Can anybody help me here please? I am preparing Guard infantry for my Ligny project and would like to get it right. Thank you in advance. Chris |

True black may have been preferable but it is very rare for a horse of any breed to be completely this colour. Just as there is no such thing as a white horse which are all termed as grey or gray. Liver chestnut, sooty and mahogany bay are black-ish colours. Some of the dark dapple (steel or gun-metal) greys seem to have been preferable too. Apologies getting my horse-power colours slightly confused ;) |

Here's a montage I knocked up from Bucquoy's La Garde Imperial 'Troupes a pied' tome.

Thank you for your promptness in replying to my query gentlemen. The pictures are very useful, not just for the horses and any further help would be appreciated. Thanks Chris |
