"Washington's green light for a new generation of steerable and smart tactical nuclear weapons may signal the start of a new US nuclear arms race with China and Russia, military analysts say.

Russia and China are believed to have been developing similar weapons for decades, but Chinese experts are apparently keen to learn the lessons of the former Soviet Union's failed attempt to keep up with the United States in the cold war…"

More accurate Tac Nucs would be interesting … and probably useful. But there is still the problem of fallout, etc., … I'd think this would be a last opinion sort of weapon.

But as always, like during the Cold War. The Big 3 must try, at least to keep and/or maintain Nuc parity. Of course, they may be really useful if Aliens invade Terra ?!? huh?

From the article:

The new US weapon, the B61-12, is America's first guided, or "smart" nuclear bomb. It weighs 350kg and can penetrate fortified structures several metres underground.

Wait, wut?

The USA has deployed nuclear cruise missiles since at least 1982.

missile != bomb

Having seen some of the Russians recent announcements about their new gear I think we can safely say the new arms race has been in progress for several years now. Here we go again!

I'd be fine with some dumb, neutron bombs, if those are cheaper.

No such thing as a "cheap" nuke.

The fissionables alone are millions of dollars, then you have the training and security requirements of the things.

For example, the M982 Excalibur guided 155mm shell ( link ) costs about $250,000 USD per shell in 2015 dollars, but a W48 155mm nuke ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W48 ) cost about $1.25 USDmil in 1963 dollars: $250 USDk for all the other components, and a full million (about $7.8 USDmil in 2015 dollars) for the fissionables.
