Any good rules for a small skirmish game? Ideally one for two small mounted contingents without any of those pesky peasants mucking things up?

A 1:1 figure ratio would be great

Lion Rampant? Quick and you get a good game in pretty soon.
"Knights and Knaves" from hisentco.com is nice as well

Lords and Servants works at that scale:

It's based on D&P's black powder skirmish rules, Smooth & Rifled.

Just read through Knights n Knaves looks really interesting and priced right

At boardgamegeek, someone has posted a WOTR variant fpr LION RAMPANT that appears to be well done, IMO. I think that you have to register to get access to the file though.

I intend to use Lion Rampant when I get my units painted finally. Even for larger battles.

Lion Rampant sounds about right for the OP, but I would also throw over a suggestion of the LOTR Strategy Battle Game by Games Workshop. A very simple skirmish game that works for historicals.
