Okay friends have or are building French, English, Saxon, Swedish, Austrian, etc., and Prussian armies. The only two that sound interesting to me are Spanish (personal preference and know very little but researching) and Russian (know absolutely nada) so I need some ideas about eventually building a Russian 18th century army along with a "Spanish" themed army for these wars. Personally Anglophobic so that is a factor to consider in advice, just saying.

Mostly interested in late 7YW Russian armies and WSS "Spanish" themed armies.

Any sources for books, rules, miniatures appreciated.

"Personally Anglophobic"………….?

That means he's not a fan of the House of Hannover, I would suspect…

I'd say Russians.

Easy paint jobs. Generic, in the sense that they are a whole lot of the same thing for infantry. Makes for an easy time if you want to raise a lot of troops quickly, but it can be a bit tiresome.

If your mates are already building forces, then what rules are they using? I'd start there.

I'd check out the Kronoskaf website for some basic lead in information and then go from there.

Hope that helps.

Eric

If the whole gig is ImagiNations, it might not matter to you, but the uniforms of the WSS are quite different to those of the SYW. If your friends are basing their armies on one of these two periods, then I would recommend that you go with that. Generally, the Russians tend to be fairly uniform and the Spanish have a lot more variety. The Kronoskaf website, as recommended above, is simply wonderful.

Good luck.

Personally Anglophobic refers to how I was raised, not any dislike of English/British people I meet in my line of work. I see the UK/Aussies/Canadians/Kiwis as the allies we count on and need the most. If your best friends can't tell you you are doing something stupid, who can? -grin

I do admit I prefer fighting the British on the table top (French, Spanish, North Americans, Latin Americans, Zulus, etc., why not fight the best through the end of the 19th century or later?)

I also like the Spanish due to family heritage whether kickass Conquitadores or less than stellar other eras like the Napoleonic wars. I believe bad armies are poorly led, poorly trained, poorly equipped and/or poorly fed rather than any "National characteristics" themselves. Despite that the Mexicans (sorry, Tia,) do not arouse the same level of enthusiasm as the Spanish.

First is the large numbers of 7YW armies in 15/18mm my friends have, second is my personal interest in the Spanish theatre of the WSS, and finally Imagining-nations, if that helps.

I look at Khurasan Bourbon Spanish and I drool about an army even if it never played a single tabletop game. I have never done that before in my entire life. Never.

Eureka's 18 mm Russians are worth a look:

If you like the Spanish, you should do early Italian Wars,so you can be El Gran Capitan.

Hmmm, pike and shot has never been a genre that has caught my attention.

I have Old Glory 15mm SYW Russians. Easy to have a reasonable number, because you can have them in three different kinds of uniform: in the green coat, without the coat, so all over red and the Observation Corps, with green coats and cavalry boots ( I would hate to march in those… ) . So in your place that would be my choice.
The suggested site Kronoskaf is really gold !

If it's "imaginations" can you not paint your troops however you want? I always assumed that was kind of the point?

Imaginations comes last of the three.

HvS, you are evil to tempt me with those videos…

So many people do English/British that I don't want to do them just like I avoided French when I did Napoleonic French back in the Tricolor rules days. Be original, don't just pick the elites (perceived elites anyway.)

Koenig Kreig is my best friends' rule of choice.

What amazed me in Hafen von Schlockenberg's video link was seeing the clash of pike troops! How did no actors get killed or injured during the filming? I didn't see any rubber pikes or metal tips bending…those things looked WAY to dangerous!!!
