I had the opportunity to visit the Mariners Museum in Hampton Roads, Virginia last week (my third trip). WOW!

They have the recovered artifacts from the USS Monitor (engine, turret, & various bits) plus even some things from the former USS Merrimack, the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia.

This huge wing of the museum, The USS Monitor Center, features a full scale outdoor mock-up of the Monitor, a full scale bow section of the Virginia (you can enter the casement), a mock-up of the turret on the sea-floor, a mock-up of the turret as designed, lots of excellent multimedia interpretive displays, etc.

Here are some photos to whet your appetite.

Plus some from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Trophy Park.

I used to go there when I was little. I loved that place! Hope to go back one day with my own children. :)

Great museum! Used to visit it every chance I had when I lived up there.

Went there as a youngster.

A really interesting place, definitely worth putting on your calendar to visit.

Shameless Plug Here!

If you're planning on attending the "Guns of August" Show in Williamsburg, VA, two weeks from now it would be the perfect time to make a side trip to the Mariner's Museum just down the road in Newport News, VA!!

A good museum, your visit was on a nice day too. I must warn visitors to check the opening times, as they sometimes close on random days too!

A fine museum. I make a point of dropping in when I have to go to Virginia Beach.
