…Brain Implants?.

"Turns out that the Pentagon appears to be speaking about programs they have sanctioned under DARPA in addition to similar efforts by the British military which have pretty close to nothing to do with Russia.

Top American military officials claim that Moscow is working to create "enhanced human operations" technology they say "scares the crap" out of them with the specter of stronger, faster, and more deadly super soldiers on the horizon according to the latest musings from the Pentagon.

In the bid to develop a superior fighting force, most countries are looking to weapons based around robotics, lasers and exoskeletons to create a real-life Iron Man, but the US military officials, perhaps in a bout of propaganda, suggest that Russia is focused on also augmenting human biology – think more X-Men than Iron Man – in order to create the most deadly fighting force in the world…"

one would certainly hope so, that sort of thing is expected of them

zoneofcontrol08 Aug 2016 5:27 a.m. PST

One would hope that they wouldn't use them for making war or participating in international sporting events either.

We already have the most deadly fighting force in the world. Its called thermonuclear weapons. We can destroy whole societies in a single blast.

Until they Russians figure out how to render them invulnerable to temperatures of 6000+ it's a waste of time. They still gotta eat, sleep, and s**t, and disease and stupidity won't go away. The other problem is that until you figure out mass cloning you still have to make the soldiers twenty years or so before in the same old fashioned way, one baby at a time. It's a completely wrongheaded way of doing things.

Besides the Arabs have already figured it out with their terrorists. Just need a lot of ignorant teenagers hopped up on religion. No brain enhancement needed. In fact it will probably get in the way.

There are limits to human biology.

They already made one!

… but we have a "secret weapon" from Philly!

Got to agree with Otto …

We see the proof-is-in-the-pudding, so to speak …

And here is the bottom line, IMO …

We already have the most deadly fighting force in the world. Its called thermonuclear weapons. We can destroy whole societies in a single blast.
And as we see some of those same Arabs and others in those regions. They would like to get these weapons as well. And IMO … that truly is the "nightmare scenario" … Because they may just use their religion(s) to justify deploying nucs.

Ottoathome, I don't think they would be plugging this stuff into just anybody. Todays wars are largely fought by local militias, conscript forces and terrorists, supported by air power and special forces.

The threat of atomic warfare, so they say, has largely subsided and most people in positions of power, even during the Cold War, are sensible enough to realize that it's an awful idea.

They've wised on to the game and it seems they've settled into a rhythm of barely covert, undeclared proxy warfare… The type of combat where something like this, if it's even real, is valuable.

Even now, special forces tend to be drawn from the best educated, most determined and intelligent soldiers available. If the technology, and the will, are present, it's them that will receive this equipment.

That is very true. And many times their missions require the best tech. But that being said, SF types only make up a small part of any military.

And just as a sidebar. I'm pretty sure the probability of a nuc being deployed by the US, Russia or China is very remote … even tiny. But I don't think I can say that for some in the Mid East, etc. …

Well, if anyone is going to do this it's the Russians – they accept higher rates of training casualties for their SF than almost anyone else – plus they are intensely pragmatic abouth things military; after all, who else designs tanks that need loaders who are left-handed people under 5' 6" based on having 200 million people to conscript them from?

Didn't Stalin have some research done on a gorilla/human hybrid or did I just see that on the History Channel?

Zargon08 Aug 2016 11:21 a.m. PST

I play my lower trumpet to all that, if anyone is doing hybrid soldiers its those little guys who own lots of the western economy, just getting it all ready for when there's payment default and they need to send a reminder to the corporations. And isn't it big goes in the US for cybernetics? Saw some guy testing out a new arm and hand (the othe guy was a double amputee using a harness) the arm was fixed into a metal anchor set in the guys arm, wow the guy was gearing up for a Robocop remake for real, fascinating yet scary at the same time, claims of helping the handicapped were not allayed when you think of how many guys who had parts blown off wanting to get back and in the armed forces. All the stuff moved through thought and sensors. So if anyone is doing enhanced uber soldiers look closer.

cwlinsj08 Aug 2016 11:53 a.m. PST

More horse hooey from Sputnik.

Sputnik should spent efforts writing scripts for Hollyood rather than propaganda.

The reason why this would never work in current world is costs. The costs to "boost" soldiers bio mechanically for Russia is too expensive. Add attrition rates from death, wounding and service terms makes this not worthwhile. The USA is going in more cost-effective direction with mechanical enhancements like power suits, which can be passed to the next soldier.

as an aside…Anyone wanting to read some excellent SciFi about what happens to enhanced ex-soldiers thrown away by their governments should read "Veteran" by Gavin Smith. Great action novel, like great anime without any singing!

Given the history of Russian science….Drooling vegetables more dangerous to themselves than an enemy.

Them Russkies are a sneaky and cunning bunch …

Didn't Stalin have some research done on a gorilla/human hybrid or did I just see that on the History Channel?
I saw that too … but from what I remember it didn't work out so well. The scientist in charge was killed or died or something like that. huh?
