An excellent analysis of the battle (campaign) seen from both sides. Available on BBC iPlayer.

Would have been nice to watch, but it says the iPlayer only works in the UK….

yeah the way the BBC locks down their content from an international audience never made sense to me. Of course this just encourages people to pirate it, and it is readily available on the usual sites to download.
Anyway, it is a 3 parts series and quite good if you can watch it.

I found it very good, except his "shocking" conclusion at the end is not really a suprise, and an opinion I have held for years.

Big Martin Back03 Aug 2016 12:33 p.m. PST

Yes. I didn't find it that "shocking" either. Bit of an inescapable conclusion if you study what happened.

Cardinal Hawkwood03 Aug 2016 4:15 p.m. PST

The BBC seems to wish to encourage piracy.

The BBC is restricted on what it can and can't show internationally by the terms its charter.

Yes it was interesting how both sides changed their tactics. I thought the Germans use of machine guns fired from up to 3km behind their lines was very interesting.

yeah the way the BBC locks down their content from an international audience never made sense to me.

Something to do with the license fees that UK citizens pay. Why should others get stuff for free?

VVV reply04 Aug 2016 9:56 a.m. PST

Ah but some feel that everything should be free, its a POV.

Amazing how much the Germans Knew about what the allies were doing. Times and locations of attacks revealed by pows, picking up plans and tactical manuals from captured trenches.

Also interesting the evolving defensive tactics, with increasing sophistication and depth.
