I recently purchased Neil Thomas's Wargaming Nineteenth Century Europe 1815-1878. The book shows photos of what I imagine is meant to be the Battle of the Chernaya with French vs. Russian forces, but the only Crimean War battle covered in detail in the book is the Alma. I have the historic OB for the battle but I wonder if anyone has bathtubed the battle so that it can be fought with a simple set of rules on a small to medium sized game table. Particularly interested if anyone has tried the battle using Neil Thomas's rules. The Battle of the Chernaya seems to me to be one of the only battles of the Crimean War that offers opportunities for maneuver and a fairly well balanced set of opposing forces. Okay, I admit the Russians were mostly militia.

The Chernaya is one of the scenarios in my "Bloody Big European Battles!" scenario book, designed for use with the BBB rules. It pits 13 Russian units (plus artillery) against 12 Allied (plus possible reinforcements), so it's not too far off NT's 10-a-side scale. With BBB it is a 3 or 4 hour game on a 6'x4' table.

You are right, it is a game with interesting maneuver and a tough fight.

BBB is more complex than Neil Thomas, but then everything is. The past couple years my group plays NT or BBB, mostly BBB lately.

I think Chris has the right approach for converting scenarii to NT rules. Essentially, don't worry about exact numbers but try to get the number of bodies of troops on the table. You can rate them as you see fit. It will probably work well.
