An illustration of just how thick hedgerows were –

Story from my dad who was with 82nd Airborne and fought at Timme's Orchard. Note, he had modified his M1 Carbine to be fully automatic.
"I was crawling over a hedgerow when I looked face to face with a German machinegunner and his assistant. I killed the assistant but the gunner wounded me in the right shoulder… I am certain I also wounded the gunner."
He later told me the force of the round knocked him on back and he thought," oh my God I am dead." When he came to, his curiosity got the better of him and he checked the area – both were gone but he saw blood everywhere.

In other words, the German MG crew was on the other side of the hedgerow yet they were unaware of each other.

Salutations, gentlefolk,

Now that I'm retired, and living a 15-minute bus ride from the departure gates at EWR, was thinking might be good idea to take advantage of off-season fares, see the world.

If you have advice or opinions on gatherings which might be worth visiting this coming winter, please let me know.

Thanks, very much.

Your time period covers quite a few shows both north and south of the border as well as shows large and small.

Where in the UK would you plan on basing yourself and would you be dependent on public transport or would you hire a car?

I imagine this list will get updated for next year at some point:

partizan.org.uk/events.php

It is usually pretty comprehensive. There are a LOT of shows Jan-May 2017. Depends what sort of thing you are interested in.

The infamous bug strikes again?

Salutations, again, gentlefolk,

Haven't decided exactly where or when. Am retired, so flexible timing. Started this thread to scout for information.

Not going to try learning left-side driving at my age (have enough trouble dealing with US traffic).

Thinking of flying (maybe via Iceland) to non-London UK city near a game show, seeing attractions in area, seeing show, meeting people, playing some friendly games, maybe learning new rules, hauling back suitcase of lead…

Will be going through Partizan list, checking websites, seeing what looks interesting.

Would like your suggestions, opinions, etc.

Thanks, very much

Well, York would be somewhere nice to see and there's Vapnartak there, at the Racecourse. It's a clean, bright venue and some nice-looking games, although participation ones seem to be fewer in number. Also, there's a small air museum near York, as well as edencamp.co.uk up at Malton. There's the Royal Armouries at Leeds too, although probably worth making sure there are some events on. I find there's an awful lot of space to be filled.

Hammerhead early in March at Newark is all participation and you and there's another air museum near by, which more there than meets the eye. You could also check out some of the Nottingham manufacturers.

The above suggestions are all good but are also early in the year when the UK weather can be a bit unkind.

Carronade (a great show) in Falkirk is in May when Spring will have arrived so is better from a weather point of view.

Handy for both Glasgow International Airport as well as Edinburgh International Airport (it's smack in between) with both rail and bus services to both cities.

Salutations, gentlefolk !

"when the UK weather can be a bit unkind" – Had a blizzard here in January, dumped 66 cm of snow, couple af days in February, high temp -8 C with 33kph winds.

If UK weather is much worse than that, maybe I'll just hibernate. (then again, was 35 C here last week)

Some friends of mine, Viking enthusiasts, really liked York.

Is 350th anniversary of founding of Newark, New Jersey, this year, local paper had article on other Newarks of the world…

Thanks very much for enlightening me. Further suggestions and opinions welcome
