These are the figures that I am attempting to name. The first coat of greenery has been laid down and I have to determine where the troops will fight, before I can proceed. Name the Unit and the battlefield. [URL=http://s222.photobucket.com/user/nevinsrip/media/VA%20REG_zps7g8v5ec5.jpg.html]

Eric I am liking the VA Brigade for Guilford. An excellent choice. What flag would you choose? |

Bill The ACW Virginia flag is the standard "Sic Semper Tyrannis" on blue. This is based on the seal adopted by Virginia in 1776. So it is not beyond reason that a similar design be used in the AWI. You can probably get this from your favorite ACW flag manufacturer.
Richardson states that this design could probably have been borne by one or more Virginia AWI standards. It was definitely on Virginia paper currency. |

Or print it yourself on a buff or red field. Richardson has a chapter on Virginia flags. Most are for specific militia or Minuteman flags though. There might also be a link to Virginia in the chapter on the Gostelowe standards. |

The seal didn't appear on a flag until April 1861. |

What flag would you choose? What about this one? qm1stva.blogspot.com It may not have existed, but the pattern is consistent. |

Roger, Richardson says it was "probable". |

I'm thinking about making my own. Perhaps a Waxhaws type field with the words 1 ST VA BRIGADE on it. I'll have to ponder this. |

Bill, Being late to the conversation, my first impression is that a good number of your figs have the cocked round hat which much of the Virginia Line had at the BEGINNING of the war. The blue/faced red clothing scheme showed up early among the mid-Atlantic colonies, but not completely though out all regiments. Your figures have that smattering of hunting shirts and civilian clothes. IIRC, many of the Virginia Line had a similar flag in 1776 in that they were similar in design with minimal difference. IL have to look for the reference, but it might've been the journal of Public Stores at Williamsburg in 1776. What I've done is use the 8th Virginia flag and change the designation in the scroll on the flag. In my case, I changed it to the 7th Virginia while creating the 3rd VA Bde. Mike |

Hi Mike, The hats may be early war for some, but I wanted an identifiable VA unit and that was the best way to do it. Besides, I've had the same hats for years, so who's to say? I'm going to make my own flag, using the Waxhaws' flags as a basis. I think that it's the best way to go. |
