Here's a link to another fine article by Fred Adolphus. This time, he writes (and illustrates) about foreign manufactured overcoats imprted into Confederate service during the war. In particular, he writes about English Army overcoats, as they made up the bulk of imports. The article is well worth your time to peruse, particularly if you are painting CS units for Gettysburg, or any 1863 units regardless of theater. link |

Doubt if there was much need for overcoats in July of 1863, unless used as raincoats. |

True, Don. My reark on that was in reference to the color, and the fact that much of the ANV had been issued with new clothing made from either this material, either ready-made from overseas, or constructed in the various CS depots to local patterns. This material was available in all theater, having been run through the blockade not only at Wilmington and other eastern ports, but also at Mattamoros Texas and thus into the trans-mississippi and AoT departments as well. |
