Buff

RCN Corvettes were named after towns and Asbestos is a mining town in Quebec so makes sense.

There was a HMS Pansy schedulled as a corvette but the name was changed to HMS Heartease" before launching The Flower class did have a number of "cute" names that probably provoked a little kidding aimed at crew members of shipd like Buttercup, Perriwinkle, Chrysanthemum, Gardenia Tulip, Gardenia, etc.

@ Italwars.

I do realise the problem about naming ships in the Italian navy. I mean can you really name an Italian vessel, "Matapan" or "Taranto"?

Then if you name them after no doubt great Renaissance men such as Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael or Michelangelo, the boats sound like a bunch of mutant turtles.

I guess there's great men like Count Ciano, but a ship named "Ciano" would have to sail in a flotilla led by a thug who later on turns his guns on her & sinks the "Ciano".

( a little something for you to read:
link )

However, I hope you don't think I'm mocking the Italian navy.

In all sincerity I must applaud their humanitarian work in rescuing African refugees this last while. Well done, Italy!

Thanks for that info. That does give some kind of meaning to it. I just hope she never suffered a major fire. I've always associated asbestos mining with Australia so I didn't see a Canadian link. I can imagine that "Buttercups" probably had a short fuse.

My uncle won the George Cross while serving on ships named the Gay Corsair and Gay Viking…[I'm not sure which of the ships he actually served on and he's long gone now.]

I'm always skeptical about naming ships after politicians. There are more important issues but I think naming a ship USS Ronald Reagan is particularly ridiculous. What next? USS John Wayne?

I suppose with the UK they have enough ships to fill the whole range from Candytuft (which sounds like a My Little Pony character) to metal names like Warspite.

I say we combine the Fig Newton and '80s bands suggestions to deliver… the USS Juice Newton.

Mock me? Why would anyone mock the decent & professional efforts of Italy to save the less fortunate? Again, a salute to the Italian navy for their humanitarian work.

I fail to understand you.

Pretty sure this ship was not named with ISIS in mind, nor does anyone in charge of naming ships really care about what ISIS thinks. We are on a website that has a newsfeed about toy soldiers. With all that is going on in the world, I'm sure ISIS and AQ are more important than this silly hobby. Take up your rifle and invade; there can be no middle ground or normalcy while Daesh lives!

Now that I'm out of the DH … I thought I'd make my intent clearer … My remark about Daesh, AQ, etc., shaking in their boots, etc. … was … Hyperbole … I even posted the definition …

hy·per·bo·le.

NOUN

synonyms: exaggeration · overstatement · magnification ·

We should all know the only things that really makes Daesh, AQ types shake in their boots, sandals, etc., are JDAMs, Hellfire, GAU-8, etc., …

We are on a website that has a newsfeed about toy soldiers.
But the post was made by the Editor … and he knows, again … this board does not always talk about toy soldiers, wargaming and modeling etc., …
Unless I missed it somewhere that Bill of anyone else mentioned making an oiler model and needed a "catchy" name …

The point I am making Garand is by complaining about the post I made in jest about naming of an oiler because of Daesh is just silly. When we have a website here that advertises toy soldiers but on a post that has nothing to do with toy soldiers.

… a little perspective is useful here…

Yes, how in the world can a bureaucracy the size of the US military-industrial complex possibly do two or more things at the same time?
The answer to that would certainly get me back in the DH …

The real reason for your complaint is pretty obvious, Ralph.
Really ? So you can read minds now Carnak ? Well you better get you $$$$ back from whoever taught you. Or is your reading me clouded by your preconceived biased about my POV, Kreskin ? Which is probably biased too ?

So let me use my powers to read your thoughts …
You think because of my politics, etc., I am anti-gay or racists ? Which is not accurate … so you being able to read my mind you should know that if you are The Great Stromboli ?

Or maybe because as a Tax Payer, I disagree with a decision made by the Federal Gov't ? Isn't that part of democracy ?

Again … get your money back … Houdini …

What better way to tell the fundamentalists we're fighting to get stuffed?
Read my post to Garand …

But I have to agree it's a weird choice for a ship. Did we run out of sailors known for their actions in combat? And I second the call to stick with place names and battles.

Well, what's left of this thread, anyway. Pretty much all the detractors have been deleted or snipped. Makes you wonder what Bill expected when he posted this.
Hmmm ? One could wonder about this … since as some pointed out. This is a site about playing with toys, wargaming, modeling etc. … And the post really has noting to do with any of those ? But as I said, this board does not always talk about any of those either … Hmmm ?

The US tended to go for butcher sounding names
You mean "butch" … yes ? Like Macho, Alpha Male, aggressive, etc., that sort of thing. That is many times what the US military culture does … as opposed to other nations. It certainly is matter of cultural, I'd think …

I'm always skeptical about naming ships after politicians. There are more important issues but I think naming a ship USS Ronald Reagan is particularly ridiculous.
Well I'm not a flag waving Reagan fanboy. But he was very instrumental in ending the Cold War. So I'd think that is important to take into consideration.
What next? USS John Wayne?
Again I think this is a lack of understanding of US culture. John Wayne, though never having served was a "cultural" Icon. So he is thought of highly by some/many in the US. [I'm more of an Eastwood fan, anyway.] Regardless I'd think based on the US habit of naming naval vessels with "butch" titles … I'd thing he might be a better choice than some of the other names that the USN has chosen for their Oilers. But maybe that is just me ?

"Why would anyone mock the decent & professional efforts of Italy to save the less fortunate? Again, a salute to the Italian navy for their humanitarian work"

Ochoin maybe you're nt aware that your salute will be, among others, very appreciated by criminals and Lybya/ISIS mafia smugglers and war lords notably making unsavoury business and criminal profit also by letting convey those illegals "immigrants" by the Italian Navy's yellow cabs at the expense of we taxpayers

Hmmm … that is a good point …

PVT64109 Aug 2016 12:34 p.m. PST

The USS John Wayne would have to be a Landing Assault ship.

Sounds about right to me !
