… we never got to see. "The Empire Strikes Back is considered by many Star Wars fans to be the best film in the franchise. What most people don't know, though, is that The Empire Strikes Back wasn't the first Star Wars sequel planned. That honor goes to Splinter of the Mind's Eye, which was written by sci-fi author Alan Dean Foster and published as a novel in 1978 but never filmed. So why did George Lucas commission a sequel and then decide not to actually make it? Here's a look at the lost Star Wars movie that might have been. Fans can debate George Lucas's merits as a director and a writer for all eternity—and they probably will—but one thing nobody can deny is that the guy is a master businessman. Read it when it came out. I thought at the time that it changed Luke's character far too much, and given the later family development the relationship with Leia was just wrong. |

I liked it. But then I liked the 80s comics too, much more fun and less po faced than most of the 90s EU stuff. |

Written by the same guy who did the novelisation for Star Wars, too (Lucas later had HIS name put there). It was a sequel that could be shot on one lot, on the cheap, in case SW succeeded enough to get a sequel, but not enough to get a big budget. It's got quite a few cringeworthy moments in it – but what SW movie doesn't, if I'm poking that bear … ? |

I read it when it first came out, too, and thought it did a poor job of capturing the feel and excitement of the original movie. |
