On the whole.

True or false?

I'm sure they appreciate something that isn't on a tiny flickering screen, but I'm not sure what.

I doubt that most even know what Monty Python was.

I don't know all of them.

My kids are millennials, and so are many of their friends. They have an appreciation for Monty Python.

Weasel21 Jul 2016 3:41 p.m. PST

it's way before their time.some will, most wont.

in 20 years they'll complain that young folk don't appreciate anime anymore

Ugh. Could we please stop using the word "Millennial" as if it means something?

I mean besides "kids are different nowadays and I don' like dadgummit, not one tootin" bit. And get off my lawn. Ah, my ass is twitching again."

Interesting. I see the term millennial rapidly become a term of disrespect.

In the UK they appear to be Brexit whiners who can't bare the thought of their main life prop being taken away (whilst chasing pokemons down the street with their phone).
And here in NZ they are usually blaming baby boomers like me for not being able to buy a million dollar house within days of getting their first job out of university (whilst chasing pokemons down the street with their phone).

I've a four and six year old who are loving Holy Grail…silliness appeals to all generarions, and as they get older they'll only appreciate it more

Vigilant22 Jul 2016 2:34 a.m. PST

Well I was a teenager when the shows 1st aired and even then I thought that they were over-rated. You had to watch a lot of puerile dross for the few nuggets of genius. When they were good they were amazing, but 90% of the time they were at best average and more often than not just stupid. Passage of time hasn't changed my view. Holy Grail is generally good throughout, as is Life of Brian, mainly because they had a proper structure. But the TV shows were very hit and miss. (Steps back and waits for the rage)

Oh Bugger22 Jul 2016 3:38 a.m. PST

I'd agree with all that.

(That's about as outraged as I can get)

McWong7322 Jul 2016 6:29 a.m. PST

They were truly firing on all cylinders in Holy Grail and Life of Brian. Terry Gilliam's animations have stood the test of time, otherwise the show tends to feel dated. But I'll tip my hat to them, they had a massive influence on english language scripted comedy.

Gennorm22 Jul 2016 7:08 a.m. PST

The Judean People's Front discussion scene in Life of Brian resonates so well today that the Millennials would surely appreciate it.

Gennorm22 Jul 2016 7:11 a.m. PST

the TV shows were very hit and miss

John Cleese said that too.

My son does appreciate the Pythons and all their glorious silly humor. However, he was trained from a very young age by Mrs. Gorilla and Mrs. Non-Gorilla at the Ministry of Silly Walks. So, of course he appreciated the finer points of pointed sticks and fresh fruit killers. He showed the Life of Brian at his birthday party. So, the Python Appreciation Club lives on.

I would say most people of that age demographic don't even know who they are. And my 77 year old dad bemoans the fact that none of the aides in the nursing home have any idea what the Battle of the Bulge was …

There's been a lot of this on TMP lately. Must be the hot weather.

A story:

I was at the world premier of Return of the king.

They had a big show(and Viggo showed up and sang)
Outside there was "knights" play fighting, And it took exactly 10 seconds before every one around started to quote the black knight scene.

It's only a flesh wound. I'll bite your head off ect.

So Monty pythons legacy is safe with the milianials.

its only a flesh wound22 Jul 2016 12:52 p.m. PST

I'm a millennial and I've loved Monty python since I first saw Holy Grail.

Bellbottom22 Jul 2016 2:49 p.m. PST

Oh. Sorry. Must be a TMP Abuse bug from thread 12… :)

Like most cultural icons, portions will continue on although most of it will fade. I'm sure Millennials memorize skits from, uh, er, some Millennial-ish show and will bemoan the same thing in a couple generations.

I admit that I never got the UK (real) people references when first watching in the 1970s, although I suspect they were popular at the time of the original joke.

That said, a couple of days ago, the Wall Street Journal had a political column that referenced the Life of Brian skit about "What 'ave the Romans ever done for us?" And back I was inside the scene before you can even say aqueducts.

Henry Martini22 Jul 2016 5:07 p.m. PST

And they got worse with each season, Vigilant; especially the fourth, after Cleese's departure. Most of that series was frankly embarrassing. Even Cleese rates series three and four as significantly inferior. He's often said publicly that they ran out of ideas.

As my kids are Millienials, therefore I am most certainly not one … there are a lot of people in my generation <goan> who don't have a special appreciation for Monty Python.

Off the Cherts? That's a bit extreme.

I would never throw a hero off the cherts, a politician in a heartbeat, but never a hero.

Mardaddy27 Jul 2016 3:13 p.m. PST

My son is 19. He and his friends of all sexes LOVE Monty Python.

Tom D129 Jul 2016 11:24 a.m. PST

It seems that, with cable, computers, youtube apps, etc., the great ones of the past will all have "niche" fans and followers, but there probably won't be the sort of universal recognition we of the baby boom world experienced.

Scorpio18 Aug 2016 8:49 a.m. PST

Bear in mind most of Monty Python came out *decades* before they were born, so it's not surprising that it's less popular for them.

Stepman323 Aug 2016 8:14 a.m. PST

Im not a Millenial, I don't care for Monty Python at all, but I like Benny Hill, Bean and shows like "Are You Being Served"…

Covert Walrus18 Dec 2016 1:36 p.m. PST

Well, I have a few younger friends who are Furries, and they appreciate how the Pythons were the first people to acknowledge them . . . YouTube link

Zephyr118 Dec 2016 3:20 p.m. PST

It's hilarious that the name "Monty Python" got past the censors…

Volleyfire18 Dec 2016 4:49 p.m. PST

Have to agree on the hit and miss comments.I remember thinking that when they were first aired and I was in my mid teens I think. Life of Brian was really a massive step up from the TV series IMO.
