We are only three days away from the grand toy soldier game in the Sudan. So I cleared off the game table again and set up two British squares to assess the amount of space needed on the table and to make sure that there is still sufficient maneuvering room. The answer is yes:
the overhead view demonstrates how the two squares support each other, especially at the vulnerable corners of the squares.

wonderful… always wondered if the squares ended up accidentally shooting at each other. I had read that the soldiers were told to aim at the horses not the riders. In which case the squares must have come under friendly fire. |

I would imagine that the squares were further apart than what I've depicted in my pictures. Table space and edge of the world issues caused me to place the squares closer together. |

I think the squares would be corner to corner. Then everyone would be able to fire safely. |
