Too soon?

As my Favorite Convention of the year I can't wait for it to come around.

Anyone else besides me and Dan looking forward to it?

I am looking forward to it. The HAWKs are already pulling our games together.

Remember that BEFORE Fall In, the HAWKs are also hosting Barrage 30 September and 1 October.

Will the Lancaster Host still be standing by the time Fall In shows up?

Xintao18 Jul 2016 10:11 a.m. PST

I need a weeks vacation to recover from Historicon. Lets talk next week about Fall In.

The current state of the Lancaster Host was discussed at the BOD meeting on Sunday at Historicon. The convention director (Dan), gave his report which included an update on the renovations. A site visit is planned in the next few weeks to see first hand what progress has been made and what is currently being worked on.

I'd like to run Lion Rampant, Teutonics vs Poles as a theme game.

I'm thinking 8 players, 4 hours, but may adjust based on people expressing interest. As its a fairly simple skirmish system it'll only take me 5-10 mins max to explain rules and objectives.

My specific group will also most likely run ACW Naval using Sail & Steam navies, ACW using Johnny Reb 3, and possibly a zombie game. Another member wants to run a Frostgrave game as well.

Since last year WAMP got shoved into the horrible Host rooms no one ever finds and no ever comes to, I think this year the idea was to get a small set of tables in Distlefink for the entire convention. Not only will more people see the games, it won't be a total sweat box with no ventilation.

As always, we welcome kids with a playing adult.

JR3 always has a small and strong following so I don't need any help getting people there, but does anyone else have interest in any of the other games?

Already planning. We are running:
1- Road Warrior Invitarional for the late night Saturday die hards
2- Look Sarge No Charts 1/285 invasion of Poland 1939 scenario….armored trains, cavalry, tiny flimsy tanks and confusion aplenty.
Also….working for Santa Moe at the Toys 4 Tots table.

Am SOOOO looking forward to it.

Bowman18 Jul 2016 12:24 p.m. PST

I am looking forward to Fall-In too. I am making some plans that will involve a large Hail Caesar (or maybe Pike and Shotte) game with the Usual Suspects.

They seem to putting an Infinity tourny together and are busy getting those armies together.

Let's just say I'm making sure my reservations aint non-refundable.

Double G21 Jul 2016 3:46 p.m. PST

I'm not; going from the FCC and the surrounding area to the Host and the surrounding area is like going from Mortons to MacDonalds, from the penthouse to the outhouse.

The tennis barn is a dump, I keep expecting the roof to come crashing down at any minute, the Dillpickle room has the charm and atmosphere of Auschwitz………….

capncarp21 Jul 2016 4:40 p.m. PST

Double G, ISTR the Eisenhower's Sports Barn as used for the vendors _and_ the flea market. It had/has (I attended Greyhounds in Gettysburg last year there,) an innate atmosphere that was not even as jolly as the Host's tennis barn. What made it acceptable was the spirit and camaraderie of the attendees. I guess the stalag is in the eye of the beholder.

Double G21 Jul 2016 5:42 p.m. PST

That sports barn was awful at the Ike, paint flakes falling from the ceiling all weekend long the last time I was there.

But it's in Gettysburg, so warts and all, I can overlook it.

Five minutes down the road is Little Round Top and the rest of the battlefield……………

TSD10121 Jul 2016 7:27 p.m. PST

The Host is run down, but there are plenty of great places in Lancaster. Perhaps you should broaden your horizons.

YES, definitely planning to go FRI and SAT. Might even fit in some evening gaming this time around.

I plan to bring back a number of DBA games to Fall In. It's been a number of years since the real DBA has been there so that should be fun. That is Phil Barker's DBA.

Double G,

I appreciate the strong points of FCC, but there are weak ones too. For one, in the "Dillpickle" room, I don't have to scream at the top of my lungs for hours so my players can hear me amid the din.

Also, I think I'd compare FCC more to a moderately appealing diner and not Mortons (though as steakhouse go, Mortons would rank low for me). The restaurants around the center are great, but the convention hall itself doesn't strike me as much of an improvement, if any. And the bathrooms are a Superfund site in both locations.

I know you're riding high on a good sales convention, but let's keep our prospective grounded.

Double G25 Jul 2016 3:15 p.m. PST

Agreed on the noise level, I don't know how you guys do it at the FCC; on Friday night, I watched for a time Rich's outstanding F & F Gettysburg day one game and I couldn't hear a word he was saying as the GM and I wasn't even playing in the game.

The food at the FCC is ok, not bad IMO; I had the pulled pork sandwich twice, it wasn't horrible, but I'm a Yankee, what do I know about BBQ…………..was lucky to have someone who went to Wegmans twice and was nice enough to grab me some food. Sorry, the food in the dealer hall at the Host is beyond awful, I won't touch it if you paid me.

And yes, I did well moneywise, but it was still down 25% from the first two years at the FCC. Also, the main thing for me was I had a great time at the show, had fun socializing Thursday with Rusty Miller and Mark, Friday with Jim Lombardi and his son, Saturday again with Jim, Frank and Stan Johansen. I also had a nice time at dinner Friday night with Rusty and Mark and Saturday with my friend/customer Matthew Grove, who I get to see only once a year at this show, so that was a nice time for me.

I don't get the chance to hang out with a lot of the convention attendees outside of the cons, so I am grateful to be able to spend time with them.

I also picked up some nice items for my collection.

So, it's the TOTAL experience that I appreciate above and beyond the money aspect.

The one thing Cold Wars and Fall In have going for them is my cousin often can attend both of them; I have a great time with him, he's like a brother to me, so I look forward to both of those conventions for that reason alone………….

civildisobedience25 Jul 2016 7:18 p.m. PST

The best thing that can happen for HMGS' slate of conventions is for the new owners to renovate the Host. It's hard to argue with twenty years of success. Here's hoping for the best

Double G25 Jul 2016 8:21 p.m. PST

The two most comical things I've ever seen at the Host was the on/off light switch that was installed to control the heat/ac function; flick it on to turn it on, flick it off to turn it off, no thermostat control, just a light switch.

The second was the thermostat to control the heat/ac that when the front plate was removed, the thermostat was not connected to the electrical source, ie, it was installed in the wall but not wired to the electricity to enable it to run.

How that place has not burned to the ground is beyond my comprehension………….

You guys even get a light switch?! How lucky. Try being crammed into the Host room. No ventilation, nobody coming to check your games, and the temperature of a Finnish sauna despite being 40 degrees outside.

Poniatowski26 Jul 2016 9:42 a.m. PST

Always the trolls…. <sigh>
I, of course, am looking forward to it. I think it is in my job description.

Anyway… cannot wait to actually play more games.. especially By Fire & Sword….. it goes with the theme and looks to be awesome.. I hope it plays as well as it looks!

Dan,

I'm glad you're excited. Makes things easier for the rest of us.

Poland as a theme…hmmm might be worth renovating an old idea of mine..

grtbrt28 Jul 2016 11:18 a.m. PST

Poland as the theme?
Perhaps the Polish "invasion" of Czechoslovakia?

Poniatowski29 Jul 2016 2:21 a.m. PST

Well, for me… Toys for Tots is one of the single best highlights for me….. it is awesome.
