There were a lot of sieges during the Thirty Years War but I am wondering what siege lasting the longest and ended with the fall of the city?

I'm not 100% positive, but I believe it's Magdeburg. The siege began in November of 1630 and the notorious sack occurred on May 20, 1631.

It's unusual not only for its duration but also it's timing. The nature of the campaign season in the TYW typically meant that siege forces formally invested a city in June or July and sieges ended (successfully or not) by late September.

I'd say Breda, began in August 1624 and ended with the surrender in June 1625

Was not Prague put under siege in 1647 and the ending of the war in 1648 lifted the siege? It was almost a year.

None of them it was the Siege of Candida 1685 – 1669.

Is Candia considered to be part of the 30YW?

@Bill N I mistyped the first date which was 1645, which is within and is part of the Thirty Years War as Richelieu's diplomatic intrigue invested the Ottomans to attack Hapsburg interests. The Knights of Malta attacked an Ottoman convoy which contained an Ottoman VIP – Chief Black Eunuch of the Harem, the kadi of Cairo, and landed at Candia with their prized loot. This led the Ottomans to attack Crete.

The War in Candia was not part of the Thirty Years Wars and didn't concern at all French diplomacy and Ottomans against the Habsburg but Venetian and French at war against Ottomans
it was a separate Ottoman-Venetian (with allies) War in a territory belonging to the Serenissima Republic of Venice where the French didn't cease to support their Venetian allies against Ottomans, sending directly vessels and landing 11 000 French soldiers in the two expeditions in the island to reinforce and rescue the Venetian garrison, not counting the help from the Knights of Malta already counting a strong french contingent in their ranks
Richelieu didn't see it, or only from his tumb or rather the Kingdom of Heaven than of France

the Thirty Years War begins in 1618, ending in 1648 but it doesn't mean that all the wars in Europe between both dates are merged in this war, nor the Venetian-Ottoman War in Candia nor the French-English War of 1627-1629 with the long siege of La Rochelle by Richelieu, more than one year, 13 months and 3 weeks, 10th september 1627-28th october 1628 and etc…

@Lilian Not necessarily true and respectfully I disagree on the need for compartmentalisation during the early to Mid 17th Century. And, I didn't say Richelieu was directly involved. I said "Richelieu's diplomatic intrigue invested the Ottomans to attack Hapsburg interests". p.s I have that great book and many others.

Going by Wikipedia articles, The siege of Magdeburg lasted for two months and ended with the fall of the city to the Imperialists. The siege of Breda was about 9 months and resulted in the Dutch surrendering to the Spaniards. I couldn't find too much about the siege of Prague but the article did mention that half the city did not fall to the Swedes. The other part of the city was thoroughly looted, however.

As far as the siege of Candia, whether one wants to include it as Thirty Years War or not, the Cretan War sounds quite fascinating and Mugnai book looks enticing. I suppose one could use late TYW European types with Venetian and allied banners for the one side and Later Ottomans for the other. I have a lot of these figures (in 15mm) already purchased. A long war in an exotic Mediterranean environment could make for an interesting 17th Century campaign.

Cheers!
