We are going to play an epic British Colonial game set in the Sudan on July 23, 2016 using 54mm toy soldiers. The game will have over 400 Dervish carrying the banner of The Expected One, the Mahdi. Approximately 200-250 British and Indian troops will face off against the Dervish. This evening I set up the game table and starting setting out the troops:
A hoard of old Britain's Arabs of the Desert number nearly 90 figures, see above. The British have landed troops ashore from gunboats in the Nile:

will his Lordship require the silver tea set while he plays? Better lock the doors and windows, you've got a fortune in figures on that table. Have fun. |

That is how one should treat their "toy soldiers". Keeping them locked up in glass cases is a shame! Looks to be an amazing game, I can't wait for the after battle report. |

Cavcrazy: those are precisely my thoughts too, that's why I am organizing this game. I'm really looking forward to,playing it. Fritz |

The number ratio hardly seems fair to the Mahdists. |

I always think of the Founding Fathers of Wargaming and the enchanting world of childhood fun & amazement it created (for me) when I see those classic Toy Soldiers getting ready for battle. |

Beat me over the head with an Edwardian drawing room for failing to comment on this sooner. Thank you for showing this superb and inspiring collection, which really is a delight, and displays the pinnacle of toy soldiering in the old style. This is what it's really all about. Can I suggest you email off some photos to Toy Soldier Collector magazine? Heck, if you wanted to write them an article, I'm sure they'd love to see it. - Martin |

Wow. Positively fantastic!!! That first photo instantly reminded me of my favorite pics from Joe Morshauser's, "How to Play War Games in Miniature." |

Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the table. WOW! I echo all the above comments. Photos like these are *exactly* what got me into colonial wargames. I've only been collecting figures (mostly plastics) in the One True Scale for a couple of years. Sigh, when I think of all the years wasted on puny 25mm figures. Can't wait to see the photos of the actual game. |

I have made some changes to the terrain today. The beachhead zariba was reduced by 12 inches in depth as I thought that while it looked cool, it was taking up too much table space. So I reduced its depth to around 18 inches.
I also swapped out the khaki coated regiment of Steadfast figures with a variety of Trophy of Wales figures (Sikhs, Redcoats, Camel Corps, Grey coats and some khaki coats.

Der Alte Fritz: When I was a kid I would dream about stuff like this. Since I can't be part of all the miniature martial excitement your great photos are the next best thing. Thank you for posting this!!! John Miller |
