I have been searching around for flags for the War of the Spanish Succession and hit some problems with the smaller German states, particularly Hesse-Kassel and, to a lesser extent, Hannover.

The problem is that sources vary so much in what they say and the examples given. As far as I can ascertain many of the ones on the 'net are too much like the 7YW versions which are later and those suggested as early on Kronskaf I can't find any source for or other mention of a similar design.

Basically I'm confused by conflicting ideas so can anyone answer these questions ….

(1) Are there any fairly definitive sources for Hesse-Kassel and/or other german states in the WSS (I have CD's from Baccus but many have very sketchy info on flags)

(2) Am I wasting my time as there are no answers – the info hasn't survived the ravages of time

(3) Does anyone know where the Kronskaf 'earlier' flags for hesse-Kassel come from ? I can find only one vaguely similar design for a german states flag.

Thanks for any assistance.

Hi Tony,
I did what your trying to do several years ago. I wish you luck as I did not find anything (in English) other than the CD's you mention. Most of the flags I gathered are conjecture. And you are correct in not using SYW flags that much I did find out.

Thanks guys.

Jim, it is the images or descriptions of flags I need, not flags per se. Should have made that clearer.

This is my second attempt but not really getting much further so it looks like the info isn't freely available even if it exists.

I don't have any objection to conjectural designs but avoid them where there is some appropriate source(s).

Hi Tony

The links I offered to you made me hope that you would contact them directly and query them on their sources.

The answer to your question 2 above may be 'yes'.

Best of luck all the same.

Hi Jim

That might be a bit cheeky as I need the info to produce flags to add to my other ranges. Looking at those he lists, and particularly those he illustrates, I think it likely his info comes from the CDs.

Looks like a detailed scan through the documents I have and then conjecture if I think it enough to go on.

Thanks again though, not a bad idea.

Tony,

Go direct to the source. .Kronoskaf itself attributes its photo of an early flag to the Hesse Kassel Army Museum at SchlossFriedrichstein in Bad Wildungen. I visited there some years ago, and saw a number of examples of these earlier flags actually exhibited on the walls. I am sure the museum would be delighted to have enquiries from someone interested in such an arcane subject!

Museum-Kassel.de seems to,have lots of contact numbers and e mail addresses, including one for a Dr Antje Scherner which might be useful.
