This was actually ready to go a few days ago, but I went back and redid a few things, and I wanted to get it off my chest while Allied Storm and Starport Scum are being worked on this month

Price of a Mile takes the "Living Game" system used in Blast Pistol and Powder&Bayonet, and adapts it to the mud and trenches of the first world war.

The rules clock in at 25 pages, which covers rules for infantry action, horsemen, the odd tank, flamethrower and other bit of kit and provides ability scores for 11 types of squad plus 5 individual figures.

Points values are included, along with a "patrol" mission for quick pick-up games.

If you are not familiar with the "Living Games" engine, it relies on simple D10 rolls for combat, a simple "two failures and you're out" Morale system and allows each squad to move and fight in a way that is detailed without being overly complicated.

You can even carry out troops from battle to battle and an option is included for "Man to Man" mode, suitable for games with 10-15 men on each side.

As with other Living Games systems, the game will receive several updates both free and paid expansions, covering a variety of topics, including mission objectives and details on specific historical troop types.

I should add a few basics:

*The game is intentionally very "bare bones" visually, to be print-friendly. Two colours used (just headings and they print fine in grey scale) and no illustrations.

*Typical game is 3-4 squads, but if you use the "man to man" mode, it functions well as a skirmish game for a squad or so.

*No TO&E's. That kinda stuff will follow later on.

Looks very interesting. I may have to get these just to give em a read through.
Thanks!

I got em today. I'll let you know what I think after I read em a few times! Thanks, Weasel

So what, 40-50 men per side?

Weasel06 Jul 2016 10:00 p.m. PST

Clays – Around there yeah.

There's a "Man to Man" option if you just want to play with a single squad or so, otherwise 3-5 squads, maybe a machine gun or two.

I like these -my pile of Great War minis has been moved from the EBay pile to the painting pile -happy days!!

Huzzah! Always love when people find an excuse to use some old figures.

What figures are they?

mashrewba09 Jul 2016 11:12 a.m. PST

They are the actual Great War Miniatures range.
I'll try out my 20mm 1914 stuff as well -they are on bases of 2 or 3 but you've said that works for the black powder set.

Weasel09 Jul 2016 3:06 p.m. PST

Yeah, I tested using my RCW figures which are based in 3's and had no issue.

A "squad" is then 20-30 guys, which is about a platoon's worth (after a week in the field anyways) which lets you have a pretty worthwhile battle.

Using the team bases can get a tiny bit hokey when fielding tanks alongside them, but honestly, if you don't think about it, you won't notice it (and tanks causing a lot of casualties tends to make players happy anyways)
It never seemed to bother the Rapid Fire guys, so I figure I'm good :D

Weasel,
Givin them a read through & I like what I see. I need to read em a few more times, & after H-Con give em a go. I'm planning on running a WW1 land battle at 2017's H-con & maybe using Bolt Action with some WW1 modifications that I've found. We usually use Through the Mud & the Blood at home, which I love but may be a bit dicey at a Con. That's why I'm thinking BA. But I DO like what I'm seeing here & will give you more feedback in a few months after I read em again & play em atime or 2.
Thanks!

Just downloaded, we are currently playing the same scenario using different rules, so far we have played Great War Chain of Command variant and Bolt Action with the Gajo Games house rules. Up next is Through The Mud And The Blood, I will add Price Of A Mile after that or maybe next.

Don't wish to hi-jack the thread but for interested parties here is a link to the first two.
