Personally the last episode (or second part of the last episode?) worked for me with the showdown reminiscent of the first series. That being said the series overall left too many threads unexplored for my liking?

just wondering on the views of my fellow tmp'ers?

My personal peeves include;

(1) What (apart from suggesting a homo-erotic interlude at boarding school) was the point to Dr Jekyll? He seemed to bring precisely nothing to the series?

(2) Dracula….what an utterly shameful waste of a classic bad guy? Where did he disappear to after Vanessa's rather poignant death without so much as a mention?

(3) What was the point to the Dorian/Lilly story line? Served no discernible purpose save to tie up two interesting characters for the entirety of the third season then brought to an abrupt …'err don't know where this is going' halt?

While in the mood for a rant…..

(4) Apart from introducing Kaetenay and killing off the suddenly superfluous Hecate Poole and Inspector Rusk what precisely was the point of dragging half the cast to the American west only to send them immediately racing back to London?

Ignominious! ;-)

It was Fireflied for some reason (& I read the producers reasons)

I think Dr. Jeykll was introduced before the writers knew the series was ending. I was happy with the way it ended, I feel that another season would have been pushing it. Eva Green however definitely deserves an Emmy.

Frankenstein was underutilized. He would have made a great protector for Ms. Ives. Homicidal Lilly was the best part of the season.

I just finished watching the 2nd season on DVD.

Should I give the 3rd season a miss?

I guess they didn't care because, I hear, series four was cancelled.

I get the impression it was never properly supported but then that will happen when you enter what is still quite a niche market? Putting it up against GoT wasn't the best plan when everyone I know who watched Penny Dreadful also watched GoT?

A fourth series might indeed have been pushing it slightly but there was a lot of time wasted in the third series. The American trip and Dorian/Lilly story lines didn't work for me and the time might better have been spent developing Dr Jekyll and Dracula?

And losing Mr Lyle seemed rather a shame after he had cleared his honour by taking his stand with the others against Evelyn Poole and the witches? He was a rich and complex character and had more to offer?

Victor Frankenstein was handled very well though underutilised in the last series. So too Mr Clare who only seemed to stay in the series to suffer ever more heinous levels of emotional grief?

Sorry, haven't finished the first season, so not up-to-date.

Note, this is NOT a whing about spoilers!

However, is Penny Dreadful ended as a series, or just the season?

For a spoiler I wouldn't mind: Did Van Helsing ever get resurrected? Now THAT'S a waste of a character!

The season ended with the "The End" sign and the producer indicated that it was done. But is anyone truly dead with Viktor running around? :-)

Cyrus the Great05 Jul 2016 8:08 a.m. PST

Evidently, it was only ever slated for three seasons.

Pan Marek05 Jul 2016 9:28 a.m. PST

I thought it was tied up nicely. Better than many series.
But it is true that if TV producers listened to us on TMP, shows would indeed be better AND make more money. ;)

I thought it ended well also. Before it 'jumped the shark'

It is over? ;(.

I am just two episodes into season two. I'm sorry to learn that Vanessa died. Did anybody take out Ethan with the silver bullet? I wonder why Sherlock Holmes never made an appearance. He was not in league of extraordinary gentlemen either, The book versions I mean

GoodOldRebel06 Jul 2016 9:15 a.m. PST

I too would have liked to have seen even a brief cameo from Mr Holmes!
